How to Hang Onto Your Healing

How to Hang on to Your Healing

If you’re wondering how to hang on to your healing let me give you a few pointers!

I had this great idea that when I turned 40. I would bite the bullet and compete in a triathlon. I am fit. I work out every day. And I thought, shoot, I can handle this. I am in just as good a shape as most 20 something’s.

I love swimming, so that shouldn't be a problem; I used to swim laps every day anyway. I love biking, that would be a synch, the breeze coming at me at top speed invigorates me. But I hate running. That would be the booger!

I do run. In fact I like the feeling I get after a run, and that high that comes from pushing through the wall. But I still don't like to run. Partly because I have always had knee problems. The culprit: torn ligaments and tendons that never received the proper recovery time because I don't like sitting still. And I pay for it dearly. It has always kept me from running comfortably for more than 2 miles at a time.

I still really wanted to complete this triathlon. So I started training. My best friend bought me an "Iron-woman" triathlon watch for Christmas so I could keep track of my times. I had the bike. I had the sports clothes and athletic shoes. Yes, I had all the gear, but I still didn't have a good knee. It wouldn't cooperate. Most days I pushed through the pain but eventually I realized if I didn't get this knee fixed I was not going to make it.

The problem with getting my knee fixed was that surgery was required. And like I said, I can't stand the thought of being down. I work out almost every day and to me the 6-week downtime while recovering sounded like a death sentence. I require movement. I rarely sit still unless I am reading or working on my laptop or ipad. I couldn't imagine being immobile for 6 weeks. So I decided to quite training for the triathlon.

This didn't fix my knee problem. Flash forward 4 years later (I'm now 44) and Iwas still having pain in my knee. It slowed me down when doing my Insanity Workouts. Not fun. But one day I realized something.

Something every believer needs to realize.

We don't have to live with pain. We can receive a healing and keep it.

I know. I know. You're wondering how.

First you've got to know that God's Word has the key to our healing.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says,

My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings.Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.(AMP)(Bold letters mine for emphasis.)

Second, God's Word point blank says that Jesus paid the price for your healing.1 Peter 2:24 says, He personally carried our sins in his body on the crossso that we can be dead to sinand live for what is right.By his wounds you are healed. (NLT) (Bold letters mine for emphasis.)

With that knowledge under your belt

Here's the key to keeping your healing:

*You have to hold on to your healing by what you think and say.

Once you realize Christ grants you full healing, and you can believe for it, you have to fight for it. And fight you will because here's what usually happens - You start to feel better but then in time you feel a symptom return. A little bit of pain comes back. Or the swelling returns. Or you see some other manifestation.

What's happening here is that the enemy is trying to get you to focus on what you see and feel in the natural instead of focusing on the truth in the supernatural.

Why the Enemy Wants You to Speak Against Your Healing

He’s trying to get you to say the opposite of what God gave you. Satan knows what you speak is what will come to pass. That’s why he wants you to speak how you feel instead of speaking what you know. He knows the power of your words.

The truth of God's Word is this - you have been given healing. So - you can't, can't, can't begin to think like the enemy does. And you certainly can't, can't, can't begin to speak like he does.

Resist the enemy by resisting the urge to say how you feel physically. Spin it around and say, I know God healed me and I am going to feel it. I am getting better. My strength is returning. My sickness is leaving. I am healthy and whole.

How to Lose Your Healing

Don't change your confession of your words. This is where you can loose your healing. You have to hold on to your faith confession.

Look at what Hebrews 10:23 says:Let us hold firmly to the hope that we have confessed, because we can trust God to do what he promised.

See it? You've got to hold on to your confession of faith. Hold it, don't let it go or slip away!

How To Hold On to Your Healing:

1. Take in the Word:

Romans 12:2

Col 3:16 Let the word have its home in your heart.

The more at home the Word feels in you - the more comfortable you will be with thinking it. Which is good because thinking it prompts you to speak it.

2. Think the Word

As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.

If you think you’re healed, you will be healed.

You need to have faith to get your healing and you need to have faith to KEEP your healing.

3. Speak the Word

James 4:7 says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

If you start to feel symptoms come back speak to the devil and tell them to go away. Quote God's word to him. Tell your symptoms to go away.

Resist Sickness Just Like You Resist Sin

It's God's will to heal you just as much as it is to forgive you of sin. It's God's will that you resist sickness, pain, and disease just like you resist sin.

If you start feeling pain, say: Pain I resist you. I refuse to be in pain. Pain must leave. If you start feeling sick, say: "Sickness I resist you. I refuse to be sick. Christ healed me of all sickness."

This is resisting the devil and what he is trying to put back on you through unbelief and using what you say. But if you hold fast to your confession of faith - you will keep your healing.

Any time the devil tries to tempt me with a little pain in my knee, I go into fighting mode. I resist his attacks by thinking and saying out loud: Knee you are healed. Pain, you have to go because Christ paid the price for my healing. My knee is strong and feels good. All that may sound silly to some who don’t believe. But guess what? It works.

I am happy to report since learning this - I don't suffer with knee problems anymore.

Now, the question you are all dying to ask… Will I compete in a triathlon? The answer... No. But not because of a knee problem. I just don't want to run!

So come on, if you want to keep your healing, hold onto your confession of faith. That’s how you hold on to healing!

What Gives You The Right to Pray?

You know that feeling when you need to pray for something but there's this nagging feeling in the back of your mind that you don't deserve to ask? Or maybe God's too busy with people who are really righteous to listen to you? Or, even if you do get a prayer off your lips, Satan will knock it out of the air before it reaches God anyway? What gives you the right to pray? Let me show you so you can get what you need...

God gave you the right to pray when he gave you dominion over the earth. (See Genesis.) In other words, you're boss! Yeah, you... the boss!

Problem though, is that our relationship with God was broken through the measly act of a selfish woman and her selfish man eating off a tree that were not supposed to touch. That put distance between them and God. When that happened, they:

  • felt cut off from God
  • felt God was disappointed with them
  • didn't know if God would want them back
  • didn't know if God would still meet their needs
  • felt they didn't deserve the good things God could give them

Does this sound familiar? Have any of these thoughts popped into your mind when you think about praying and relating to God?

If so, take a deep breath. You feel this way simply because you're a descendent of the man and woman who made the first blunder - Adam and Eve. And yes, some of your own screw ups have contributed to these feelings too.

But there's a solution. And it's one that will give you hope and put you back in the driver's seat so you have the right to pray.

Only through Christ are you put back in right relationship with God, your sins forgiven and excused, giving you the right to pray with authority.

So what gives you the right to pray?

Simple...Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Romans 8:3b NLT

He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

Ephesians 3:12 NLT

Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.

Now, looking at the scriptures above you can see that:

  • Jesus Christ, a guy totally without sin, paid for your sin.
  • Jesus Christ forgave you, your move is to just believe and accept.
  • Jesus Christ making you clean, gives you the right to pray.

Not only do you have the right to pray, but also the confidence to pray with boldness, authority, and knowing, yep...you the boss!

I'll share with you in the next post how you can use that authority to let the devil know - that you know - you're boss. Then, he'll leave you alone, and you can have what's been yours all along. Yes, the things you've asked for, but haven't received yet. Stay tuned and I'll talk with you later!

How to Pray for Depression to Go Away

Are you feeling down? It's ok. Well, not really because you want to feel better, right? I know. I've been there too. I've worked my way into some pretty dark tunnels in the past. Thankfully I found a way out. God's about to help you out of your dark tunnel. Let me show you how to pray depression away so you can get some relief. The light is about to turn on!

Picture This:

You are happy and free from the dark tunnel of depression. Hovering clouds have disappeared. The difficult things that try to get you down do not succeed because you have your eyes focused on God and his love toward you. When you feel yourself slipping into a downward spiral, you know what to do. You pull out a list of God's goodness and he pulls you through. The Son is shining again!

Scripture This:

Psalms 40:16 NLT:

But may all who search for you

be filled with joy and gladness in you.

May those who love your salvation

repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!”

Psalms 42:11 NLT:

Why am I discouraged?

Why is my heart so sad?

I will put my hope in God!

I will praise him again—

my Savior and my God!

Pray This:

God, when I'm down and feeling low, I am determined to turn it around. Help me to pull off a good mood instead of a downward one. As I search for you, fill me with joy and gladness in you. Enable me to stay focused on your salvation because that's really the most important thing I have. With that in mind, I will no longer be discouraged. I will put my hope in Jesus because he saves me! Thank you that there is light at the end of the tunnel because there is light in you!

Say This:

If I'm down in the dumps and crying the blues, I will fix my eyes on God— I'll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He's my God and he has given me a huge reason to rejoice. Salvation is enough to make me happy. Thinking of God's goodness is keeping me going. I am climbing out of depression and I'm walking in joy today. (Based on the Message version of Psalm 42:11.)

This isn't an end all be all solution. You may be at the place where you need to seek medical help to deal with your depression. But I have found that this prayer and declaration can help put an end to depression. So use it. Repeat it often. But get more help if you need it. It's ok!

Here’s What Happens When You Pray Evil Out of Your Community

What happens when you pray evil out of your community?

Demolition crews arrive on the scene.

Oh true, it may not happen right away. But keep praying anyway and you will see evil move away.

Here's how it went down in my neighborhood:

Just a few miles from where my family and I live was a building that failed to succeed as a thriving business. Why did it fail to succeed? Because my two teenagers and I prayed for it's destruction.

The day the sign went up I drove by and gasped! "Club Lust" is what it read. You're kidding? Really? Just a few miles away from my house? I don't think so. I decided right there I'm not having it. Not going to have a "Club Lust" in my neighborhood. So I spoke up.

Every day I drove by that stinking filthy thing - I prayed that it would go away. Let me clarify. I didn't just ask to God remove it, I told it to go away. I spoke up. I demanded that it be shut down and torn down.

I told my two teenagers our plan. "Whenever we drive by it, we'll speak to it and tell it to go away. We will not have a Club Lust in our neighborhood. It must leave." Ever since then we've been telling that place to be removed.

Demolitions Start in the Spirit Realm

Our little demolition prayer started a couple years ago. It didn't happen right away. But today as I drove by that place my heart did a happy dance! I saw the demolition crew on the ground and bulldozers knocking the building over. It's being removed at this very moment.

As I am typing away on this keyboard, a bulldozer is a few miles away physically removing what I had already removed in the spirit realm. And before you get all bent out of shape thinking I'm cuckoo, just remember that Jesus told us how to handle things like this in Mark 11:23:

If you have faith in God and don't doubt, you can tell this mountain to get up and jump into the sea, and it will. Everything you ask for in prayer will be yours, if you only have faith. (CEV)

He said speak to your mountain and tell it to move. He didn't say ask that it be moved. He said, "tell it to move". That's what I told Club Lust to do. I told it to move out of my neighborhood. And this is what you can do with the things in your life that need to go. Tell them to move.

Stop Asking & Start Commanding

Too often we keep asking when we should be commanding. If Jesus said you have authority to tell something to move then get gutsy and speak up. Some of you have no problem telling others where to go... so speak up and tell your problems where to go!

The Bar's on Fire!

When I was in Bible college I met a missionary named Mark Triplett. I remember him telling a story about a bar that was in his neighborhood in Argentina. He didn't want it there. Neither did his church members. It was bringing chaos and darkness into his city. So he put a demolition plan in place.

He and his church members boarded the church bus and parked it right smack dab in the middle of the bar's parking lot. And they commanded that bar be shut down. They didn't pray sweet little, "Oh God, please remove this bar from our neighborhood kind-of-prayer".  No! They told that bar where to go.

Every night for a week they parked their bus in that parking lot and spoke up. After a week, goodness gracious!! Want to know what happened? The bar caught on fire. Right before their very eyes that sucker burned to the ground. Mission accomplished.

Take Away:

1. You have been given authority to move mountains (mountains are things in your life that shouldn't be there).

2. The mountain may not move overnight or even right away. Keep at it and don't give up.

3. You destroy things first in the spirit realm that will eventually be destroyed in the physical realm. It starts in the spirit. Then manifests in the natural.

Speak Up

Don't be afraid to speak to your mountain. You've got things in your life you can move at your command. The authority has been given to you as a believer in Christ. Use it. Stop praying and start commanding!

Find Out if Selfishness Fuels Your Prayer Life

To see if you’ve got some kind of selfish yuck motivating your prayers here’s a question for you: What fuels your prayer life?

Pain?
Needs?
Trials?

Try This One:
Selfishness. Your prayers are all about you. No? Maybe? Let's look a little closer at what fuels your prayers by discovering the different "levels" of your prayer life.

Level 1 Prayer Life - Is all about you. You pray for your needs. Not so much for others. These are "What's in it for me prayers." The buck stops with you.

Level 2 Prayer Life - You pray for you + those closest to you. You and your inner circle. A little broader than the first, so that's progress.

Level 3 Prayer Life - You are other-focused. You sincerely love others outside your family and the world around you. You feel the pain of national crisis, your heart breaks for injustice, you look out for the needy and it fuels you to pray. And you do this because you know you can make a difference if you pray for more than just yourself.

Level 4 Prayer Life - You are directed by God to pray for the things that are on his heart. Your heart cries, "Break my heart Lord for the things that break your heart. May I be an instrument of change bringing about your will to the world at large."

Is your prayer life on level 1,2,3, or 4?
The answer will tell you what fuels your prayers. If it's level 1 or 2, don't fret, just try to stretch your prayers beyond yourself a little everyday. No beating yourself up. You're a work in progress. Gradually take the plunge and spend some time praying for others. As you do, you will be changing people's lives...and yours!

Ephesians 6:18 NLT
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

To make it easier you can make a list so you can remember people who have needs. I sometimes make 3 to 4 columns in my prayer journal. A column for each prayer level. As I learn about prayers that have been answered for those on my list, I check them off. And that gives me fuel for thankfulness.

So now the question isn't, "What fuels your prayer life?" It's, “What's going to fuel your prayer life?"

The Ultimate Prayer-Play Book to Help You Win In Every Situation

My son's varsity basketball playbook is setting on the couch. So a few minutes ago I moseyed over there to take a look. Flipping though it I discovered a lot of detail. Man! I had no idea the plays he had to memorize!

That playbook's an asset he can refer back to when he needs to know what the coach has called for. In fact, if he and his teammates didn't have that playbook, they wouldn't have made it to regionals. They've become district champs and tonight they play for the title of regional champs. BUT, if those guys don't study that book, learn those plays, and execute them…it's over.

For Every Challenge or Need, God Has Outlined a Play We Can Pray

Ever felt like your prayers were useless? Like even though you prayed, you were beaten? How are you feeling right now? Like you have no chance of victory? Hold up! We too have a playbook. It’s a "Prayer-Play" Book.

With this playbook we have every "prayer-play" for every situation our opponent challenges us with. We just have to know the plays. And knowing the plays is really not as difficult as it seems. You don't even have to memorize EVERY play. You just need to know where to find the plays. Let me show you how easy this is.

1st, Go Grab the Playbook!

Where do you get this playbook? Well, you probably already have one. Yes, I'm talking about the Bible. And if you don't have one, you can get access to it online or even get a Bible app on your Smartphone.

It's never been easier to find specific plays directly from our coach's mouth. God gives us the plays in the Bible. For every problem, every challenge, every type of situation, God has outlined a play we can pray. The Bible is FULL of wisdom and golden nuggets. We just have to play them…or rather pray them!

We are promised success if we execute the plays in God's word.

Josh 1:8 NLT says:

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Where to Find Specific Prayer-Plays for Specific Problems:

Got a concordance? Get it out. Don't have one? No sweat, get to your computer, tablet, or Smartphone and use a search engine. Google, Bing, Yahoo. Whatever your search engine of choice - it will double as your concordance.

1. Simply Search

I say simply because it's not hard. Type in what you need a scripture for. Example: Need a scripture on hope? Type in: "Scriptures on hope". Need help figuring out how to pray for children? Type in: "Scriptures to pray over kids." It's that simple. Need strength? You know what to do. Either search for “strength” online or go to your concordance (usually at the back of your Bible) and look it up.

2. Make a Prayer-Play Book

Once you find the scripture references, look them up and write them down. Then take each scripture and pray them. You can personalize by inserting the name of the person you are praying for.

For example, this morning I needed an extra dose of energy and stamina. So I grabbed a scripture about strength and inserted myself into the scripture and prayed it like this:

I can do all things through Christ because he strengthens me. (From Philippians 4:13)

A couple weeks ago, a member of this blog community was having a hard time knowing what to do about a situation. I found this scripture and prayed it over her by inserting her name into it. I prayed it out loud like this:

I pray that Patricia will trust in the Lord with all her heart; and that she will not depend on her own understanding. I pray Patricia will seek God's will in all she does, and he will show her which path to take. (From Proverbs 3:5)

This is how I prayed for my family this morning:

I have not stopped thanking God for Ted, Tyler, and Tiffany. I'm asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give them spiritual wisdom and insight so that Ted, Tyler, and Tiffany might grow in their knowledge of God. I pray that their hearts will be flooded with light so that they can understand the confident hope he has given to them. I also pray that Ted, Tyler, and Tiffany will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power. (From Ephesians 1 NLT)

As I'm reading my Bible, I just pop the names of my husband and two teenagers into the scriptures and pray it over them. I pray God's play!

Making a "Prayer-Play Book" is as simple as gathering scriptures concerning your opponent (what your dealing with, or the need in your life) and praying the verses. Do that, and you will have a playbook right from God's mouth.

Search for his plays, pray his plays. and you will score.

P.S. Congrats on your win!

Let us know how you have prayed some of God’s plays. If you want, you can even pray a little prayer-play over your fellow blog readers. Put your prayer for them in the comment section for every one to read! Thanks!

When You Don’t Know What to Say When You Pray – Try This!

We've all been there - at a place in our lives not knowing what to say when we pray. Just what do you say to God when your mouth is empty? What do you do when you just can't find the words to discuss your situation with God? Here's a little jump-start. It's a prayer booster. There's four steps. It begins in your imagination, so...

Picture This:

When you are totally ignorant about how to pray - whether it be little things or big things - you don't worry. You can relax knowing that you have the help of the Holy Spirit and he coaches you on what to say. Even though you are limited in your view, he enlarges the picture. Though you may not have all the facts and details to pray effectively, your partner prays through you. You don't have to figure out your prayers on your own. You rest easy knowing you have help when you pray.

Scripture This:

Romans 8:26 NLT:

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

2 Corinthians 6:1 NLT:

As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it.

Pray This:

Father, when I am at a loss for words, I am so grateful that your Holy Spirit fills my mouth! I ask the Holy Spirit to help me continuously as I pray. Partner with me and collaborate with me in prayer. I want to be part of your team so that my prayers get me out of any mess, put me on the right path, and make a difference in other people's lives. Thank you, Holy Spirit for helping me pray prayers that make a difference.

Say This:

God's Spirit is right there helping me along. If I don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does my praying in and for me, making prayer out of my wordless sighs and my aching groans. He keeps me present before God. That's why I am so sure that every detail of my life is working into something good. With the Holy Spirit as my helper, I am getting better and better in prayer every day!

Making Prayer Sandwiches Can Help You Sleep Better & Start the Next Day Right

Ever had something gnawing atcha that kept you awake at night? A problem? A concern? A need? Let me show you how a prayer sandwich can help you sleep better. No joke, make one of these babies each day as you pray and you'll rest easy as soon as your little head hits your pillow. And bonus - you'll start your next day right!

How do you assemble a prayer sandwich?

It's as simple as slapping two pieces of bread together with something in the middle. But in this case, we're using a morning prayer and an evening prayer sandwiched together with some really amazing filler in the middle of your day!

1. Laying down the 1st piece of your prayer sandwich:

Pray in the morning as soon as you wake up - thanking God for as many things as you can think of. Your health, your family, your friends, your car, your job. How about the fact that you had a bed to crawl out of? A coffee maker you are making your way toward that's going to give you a piping hot steamy cup of AHHH! Anything you can think of to thank God for is fair game for the first piece of bread in your prayer sandwich.

2. Laying down the meat of your prayer sandwich:

Pray about the events of your day. Your agenda and tasks. This is the meat of your sandwich because it's dealing with the meat of your day. The concerns and needs you have along with prayers for people you know and love. Don't forget the people you will cross paths with who need the love of Jesus.

3. Laying down the last piece of bread that completes the sandwich:

Before you go to bed, thank God for all he did for you today. Thank him for all that you accomplished. Then, give him all of your unsolved problems. Now this is important, because if you successfully unload all of your cares, big and small, dumping them into his lap, you won't need to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about them. You will sleep better - I promise!

When you sandwich your day with prayer - you will sleep better at night and start the next day right.

How to Pray for Bad Attitude Stinkers

Got a bad attitude and want to shed it?
Let me introduce you to a little gem of a verse that we can pray to get rid of our nasty stinky attitudes for good!

When I was a youth pastor many moons ago, I took our youth group out to an area where homeless people lived so we could give them some food, toiletry items, and share the love of God with them. We made a lot of friends and this one guy in particular had a soft spot in my heart. His name was Shorty.

We picked Shorty up Sunday morning to take him to church and because he hadn't had a shower in a few weeks he smelled horrible. His hair was disgusting and his skin was encrusted with dirt. So I took him to our house to let him shower.

Filth Has to Come Off

Since his clothes smelled like something had died in them I searched for some clothes that fit him. I looked through my husband's closet and found an out fit. I was hoping that after he showered, he'd put it on. But as soon as Shorty got cleaned up he put his old, crusty, smelly clothes back on.

I said, Shorty, it's not going to do you any good to clean your body and put dirty clothes back on. I handed him my husband’s clothes and told him he could take the dirty clothes off and put on the clean clothes.

Have You Taken Off Dirty Attitudes & Put Them Back On?

This is what a lot of Christian believers do. Jesus washed us clean of all our sin and we put on a new robe of righteousness. But many people choose to reach back down and pick up old negative attitudes and stinking thinking the same way they did before they got saved. They are clean on the inside but their attitudes make them smell on the outside.

James 1:21 NLT:

So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

The word "filth" in this verse in the Greek is the word, "raparian". It describes a man whose body and clothes are so dirty that they smell disgusting to everyone near him.

James is describing a believer who is pessimistic, negative, uncooperative, and cynical. They just stink like crap! You've met people like this, I'm sure! Their attitude and disposition is so unpleasant it drives everyone away from them.

But could that also be you? Could it be me? If so, we - you and I, have to make the decision to "get rid of all the filth" - which is not referring to dirty clothes, but the stinking attitudes you and I may have.  We've got to lay down these attitudes and push them so far out of the way that we aren't able to reach down to pick them up again.

Push Away Attitudes Till They're Out of Reach

That's just what I did with Shorty's clothes. I didn't wash them. I tossed them out! I didn't want Shorty to have any chance of picking those filthy, crusty clothes up and putting them back on. And that's what we must do with our filthy attitudes. Let's pray that we push them so far out of the way we will be unable to pick them back up.

You can pray like this:

"God, thank you for washing me with the your Word, and what Jesus did for me on the cross. It makes me brand new. Forgive me for clinging to my old ways of thinking because they stink! Today, help me to drop those old bad attitudes and never pick them back up again. Right now, I let go of old stinking attitudes and ways of thinking. I ask you to help me think and behave in a way that is consistent with being a new creature in Christ. Because that's who I am!"

How Do You Know if YOU Have Bad Attitudes?

  1. Do people gravitate toward you or are they repulsed by your smell? (Hint, hint!)
  2. Do you talk more about negative things or positive things?
  3. Got any attitudes that smell to you? (Get rid of them before others detect the smell!)

Prayer for Peaceful Family Time During the Holidays

Got a tad bit anxiety about your family having a peaceful time during the holidays? No worries. We've got you covered. In fact, here's how you can cover your family time in prayer during the Christmas season.

Picture this:
You're looking forward to your family getting together for the holidays. There's not one hint of anxiety that rises up within you. Not a trace of angst. There's no fear in your bones. You know God is going to overshadow your family time with his peace. Your heart starts to get excited and do a little happy dance! You walk into a conflict-free environment.

Every room is filled with love. Real love. Not sentimental gush or garbage. Your family holiday time is filled with genuine sweet expressions of kindness. Even those who don't normally ooze with sweetness will be dripping with supernatural goodness. Goodness toward you and goodness toward other family members this year.

Scripture This:
Philippians 1: 9-11 MSG, “So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well. Learn to love appropriately. You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush. Live a lover's life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God.”

Isaiah 32:18 NLT, “My people will live in safety, quietly at home. They will be at rest.”

1 Corinthians 13:4 - 8 CEV, “Love is patient and kind, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. Love rejoices in the truth, but not in evil. Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting. Love never fails!”

Pray This:
God, thank you for this Christmas season and what it means to us. I ask you to help each member of my family to flourish with love this holiday season. Let this be the most incredible time we have ever had together.

Help us to not only love much but also well. Show us how to love each other appropriately. I pray we will treat each other with sincere love that is intelligent. And that we will behave in a way that makes Jesus attractive to all members of our family. Even bringing them to know you as their savior if they don't all ready.

Give us patience with each other when we rub each other the wrong way. And to have mercy when we blow it with one another. Enable us to each have the ability to overlook spiteful words when we say something we shouldn't. God help us to release hurts from the past and hurts that may touch us in the future.  Remind us that we are dealing with humans who are imperfect and sometimes do not know how to love each other perfectly.

Give us the ability to love each other the way 1 Corinthians 13 shows us to love. Thank you Lord that there will be safety in our home this Christmas. I am grateful that we will be at rest. And have a wonderful fun-filled family time this holiday season.

Say This:
I declare that each member of our family treat each other with genuine love, respect, and kindness. There will no trace of conflict, unforgiveness, pride, jealousy, or anger when we are together. Everyone will be able to put their differences aside and love on each other in a genuine way.

I make a decision to be patient and kind, never jealous. I will not be boastful, proud, or rude. I will not be selfish or quick tempered. I won't keep a record or wrongs that my family members do. I will rejoice in the truth, not in evil. My love for them will be supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting.

My love for each member of my family will not fail. I will love them unconditionally and they will do the same for each other and me. This will be the best holiday season we have ever experienced together celebrating the love of the Father and the birth of His son, Jesus.

5 Ways You Can Slap Your Enemies Around With Prayer

We all have enemies, right? The Bible warns, “Beware when all men speak well of you!” No matter how loving and friendly you are - you'll always have an enemy just because you live and breathe. I hate to burst your bubble but Satan, well, he just hates you - just cause you're you! And more so, if you have dedicated your life to Christ. That's just the way it is. Let me show you 4 ways you can slap your enemies around with prayer.

1. Recognize your enemy isn't really the person you think he is.

It's not Bob or Jessica that did you wrong. It's not Gabe or Melinda who is spreading rumors and making crude remarks about you. Oh, yes, it's them in the flesh, but you have to look to the being behind their flesh. The devil.

He's the one who puts ideas in people's minds to do you wrong. He's the one who causes selfish desires to rise up in their flesh. So when someone tries to take you down remember, it’s not them, it’s the devil who’s behind them.

Recognize the source.

This person is just a jerk who needs God's help to be a better person. So what can you do? Once you recognize the dark spirit behind the person, forgive them.

They know not what they do. I know that's hard to swallow. They should be smarter than that. They should know what they have done to you. Or maybe they do and they just don't care. Or maybe they know exactly what they have done to you and they meant it.

Either way, recognize the what's behind their behavior. They need God. You can pray they get a big dose of him. Which leads me to the second thing you can do for your critics. Pray for them.

2. Pray for your enemy

Why? Because you were told to. Not by me. I'm just reminding you what Jesus said to do in the Bible. Here's what a couple of scriptures have to say about it:

Matthew 5:44 says, But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. ...If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that?

Romans 12:14 says: Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.

Man, I wish those verses weren't in the Bible. But they are - and for good reason. Pray for those who mistreat you and it will end up sweetening your deal. How, because you will be helping them turn over a new leaf. Why the heck should you care? Cause deep down inside, you really do want to make a difference in people's lives, don't ya?

Here's your chance! Oh yeah, and here’s why it’s a deal sweetener for you -- what goes around comes around. You will be reaping what you sow. So on that topic - if you've ever been a jerk to someone else, they just might end up praying for you too! Win-win!

3. Forgive your enemy.

Why forgive them when they don't deserve it? Because you don't deserve it either. Huh? Yeah, you might want to read that again. You don't deserve to be forgiven either. But you are. Jesus forgave you and your crud even before you said yes to him (Romans 3:10). So do the same for your enemy. It will end up setting you free.

If you think you’re sticking it to them by not forgiving them, you’re only sticking it to yourself. Unforgiveness is one of the top reasons people fall into depression, stress related disease, and a whole bunch of other ailments. So don't waste your time holding a grudge. It only hurts you.

Ephesisans 4:32 says, ...be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

If you’re having a tough time forgiving, then pray and ask God to help you forgive. He will!

4. Love them.

I know this is the craziest idea of all right?! And the toughest. What you really want to do is get back at them. But, be the bigger person. Be the lover and you will win. Love conquers all.

John 13:34, 35 says, So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

If it's hard to love them up close then love them from a distance. You will be amazed how love can melt their heart of stone and turn them around. If you can love them you may soon enough find them in your corner. Cause that’s just how love works!

5. Instead of Slapping Them, Let God Slap a Blessing on You!

I Peter 3:9 says, Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

Did someone say blessing? Blessed when I'm messed with? Yep. It's coming if you handle it right.

I Peter 3:12 says, The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers.

Nice motivation, huh?

I Peter 3:16 says, Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

I know you're not keen on suffering, but keep the end in mind. Let God slap a blessing on you.

Prayer for You to See Yourself Successful Like God Sees You

How do you see yourself? Success or Failure? Does this contradict what God sees? God sees you as royalty. You may not feel like a king or queen today, but it's in you!

Let's look at how you can pray that you see yourself in a new way today. Put aside the lowly, insecure feelings that try to get you down. Let's pray that you begin to see yourself like royalty and reign like a king!

You've got something that the president and elected officials don't have. Ability to reign all of your days. That's right. Elected officials just get a 4-year term or maybe a 2-year term. You? You get to reign in life forever.

Romans 5:17b says, ...those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! NIV

The word reign means: Royal authority; dominion; sway or influence of one resembling a monarch. (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

The scripture above talks about reigning in life. That's forever. Not until the next election. Not until you no longer feel on top. No. You get to reign forever as long as you continue to believe that Jesus Christ put you in a position of power and success.

Why Your Qualifications Don't Matter

You'd think it has to do with your qualifications, or your most excellent ways. Nope. Not at all. You receive this position of power and success - reigning over all life’s difficulties and circumstances simply because you accept that Jesus paid for it.

You may have had so many unfortunate things happen to you in life that you can barely walk with your head held high. It might be tough just to see yourself as a child of God, yet I'm encouraging you to see yourself today as royalty.

How can you change your view?
Remember it's not about you. It's all about Christ. You are seated with him in heavenly places.

Ephesians 2:6-10 says:
For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. God saved you by his a grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

His death means you reign. What Christ did on the cross gives you access to the seat of power. So take it, it's yours. Start reigning today successfully. Pray like this and you'll be on your way to ruling and reigning like a king...

Prayer:
God, thank you that when I don't feel like enough and when I don't see myself with incredible value, you do. God, help me to see myself seated with Christ in heavenly realms. I am a masterpiece, not because of anything I have accomplished, but because Christ paid for me to become a new creation full of worth and success. When I am down on myself, remind me of who I am in Christ. Right now I reject any thoughts that I am not loved, not valued, or not important. Help me to keep my head held high. Thank you for empowering me to reign over life's difficulties because of what Christ has given me. I will reign in life and be successful!

Your Prayer-Release Valve for Financial Pressure

Have you ever been in the squeeze of financial pressure and stress? Maybe you're there now. If so, you're not alone. There are millions of people right now in tight financial spots.

The good news is you, as a believer, have a rescuer. His name is Jesus. And he offers you relief from your financial troubles. Take in these scriptures so they will encourage you and then I'll show you how to pray them.

READ IT:

Deuteronomy 8:18 says, But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth. NKJV

Luke 6:38 says,  Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. NLT

Philippians 4:19 says, And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. AMP

There are 3 ways the Bible says you will be able to get wealth:

  1. You will create it yourself because God gives you the ability and power to get it. (Deut 8:18 above)
  2. People will give you money when you have been giving to others. (Luke 6:38 above)
  3. God will supply you with the money you need because Christ paid the price for it.

Based on these scriptures, you have 3 ways for money to come to you. So let's pray these scriptures over your financial situation.

PRAY IT:

"God, you said in your word that you would give me the power to create wealth so I ask you in advance to empower me to make a good living. Give me wisdom so I know how to make an abundant income. I am grateful that I have had opportunity to give to others and because of that others are going to give to me. Your word says you, God, will be my supplier. I will not lack because you have everything I need and I know at the right time, you will put it in my hands. I ask you to meet all of my needs according to your riches that I have in Christ."

Now that you have read about it, let's speak it. Declare what God is going to do for you because it's by hearing, that your faith will increase. When you speak the blessings of God over your life, you will increase your belief and you will be putting it in motion.

SPEAK IT:

"My God will meet all of my needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus. I will not lack. God is giving me ideas on how to make money. God is opening doors for me that no man can shut. God is giving me opportunities to increase financially and professionally that will blow my mind! I trust in God, my source. When I give to others, God positions others to give to me. I will have everything I need at the time I need it. I am blessed to be a blessing. I am thankful that God is meeting all of my financial needs."

NOW BELIEVE IT!

Why Spiritual Warfare Doesn’t Work & What to Do Instead

You want to win the battle over the enemy and the forces of darkness, but let me tell you why spiritual warfare, as some know, doesn't work. And let me show you a better way. This is the way Paul and the disciples battled the enemy that cleared the air and made things happen in the spirit realm. And it will work for you too.

First, let me start with this little story that connects to how most people do spiritual warfare. I was watching the Dr. Oz show a couple of weeks ago. Dr. Oz had his dentist on as a guest. Yes, his own personal dentist! This expert on oral care proceeded to tell the audience and viewers we need to brush for 2 minutes at least twice a day. If you brush less than 2 minutes you will be creating movement but not removing all of the plaque and bacteria.

2 Minutes! Yes, 2 LONG minutes. I don't know about you, but I don't have the time nor the patience to stand there brushing my teeth for 2 minutes. But this was what he recommended. Why? Because it worked.

So, the next day, I stood at the sink for 2, count em 2, agonizing minutes. It was the most time-consuming tooth brushing I had ever experienced. I kept wondering, "How much longer can I hold out here?"

I turned on the TV. I whipped out my iPod. I tried all kinds of ways to pass the time. Time doing something I thought I was doing the right way all along. But now I had been educated. Now I knew the truth and I had no excuse.

And guess what? Now I have better results. After a 2-minute brushing my teeth really did feel cleaner. It was more effective. Thank goodness I listened to the expert.

How often do we do the same thing with spiritual warfare? Yeah, stick with me here. A lot of us have been falsely taught to go about it the wrong way. Thinking all along we are making a big dent in the spirit realm by praying up a storm.

Brushing the enemy away doesn't happen by speaking to the powers of darkness and demanding they move out of our town, out of our church, or out of the way of revival in people's lives.

Doing this is like trying to forcefully clean your teeth in 30 seconds expecting to brush away all the grime. You can't brush away spiritual powers by binding a spiritual power or by spending an enormous amount of time in prayer. Skeptical? Let's dig deeper.

Take a look at all of the New Testament scriptures. You will find:

  1. Jesus never sent his disciples out to do spiritual warfare.
  2. Paul never suggested his readers do spiritual warfare.

Yes, there are satanic and demonic powers in the air. The Bible clearly states this. But it doesn't say that the way to fight them is to pray up a storm.

Want to know what kind of Spiritual Warfare works?

The Bible says the way to fight is to take every thought captive with the Word of God.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 says, We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. NLT

The weapons that 2 Corinthians 10: 3-5 talk about are the weapons in our mind. That's where the spiritual war is located. The wrestling is in our thoughts and the thoughts that other's have. The battleground is where the thoughts are that keep people from knowing the truth of God’s Word.

Ephesians 6:11-17: Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. NLT

Since the fight is against thoughts, then the weapon has to correct thoughts. The only weapons that can correct wrong thoughts are right thoughts. And right thoughts come from God's Word.

The weapon is the Word. Bringing truth to people's minds is spiritual warfare that makes impact. It's helping them to exchange the evil thoughts Satan injects into their minds with God's thoughts.

The war is won when a person takes the right thought captive. Winning is determined by which thought - Satan's or God's – will be believed and acted upon.

Which thoughts do you and others have more faith in - God or Satan's? The answer will determine which spiritual force wins.

Binding a specific demonic power seems like it would work, but that's not the model scripture gives us. The way to win the spiritual war is to teach people the truth. You can pray all you want that this force will move or that force will move. But a better prayer would be to ask God to send someone to show them the truth and that their heart be opened to it. Better yet, you step out and share the truth with those who you're trying to do battle for.

As they begin to believe the truth and live by that truth, they will be set free and the battle in the spirit realm will be won. Demons bow to the Word of God, that’s powerful!

So then, the next time you want to engage in spiritual warfare, here's what will brush the devil away:

1. If it's spiritual warfare targeted toward you: Trade the enemy's thoughts in your mind for God's thoughts. Take every thought captive and you will break free and win the spiritual war. The truth will set you free.

2. If it's spiritual warfare targeted toward others: Introduce them to the truth of God's word. Tell people the story of Jesus and what he did for them on the cross. Show them what scripture says about their situation so they can think God's thoughts not what the enemy feeds them.

When this happens you and others will be set free. Yes, this takes longer than just praying. And yes, it means more work. But, you'll have a lot more impact in the spiritual realm if you do it right.

Fighting thoughts with the Word is spiritual warfare that stops the enemy dead in his tracks and it will work - that's what you do instead!

Are You Following Your Own Directions When You Pray or God’s?

I bought a new razor. Took it out of the wrapper. Jumped in the shower. Removed the guard over the blade, popped it in the handle and tried to use it. I say tried, because the stinking thing wouldn't work. I shaved one leg but still had stubble. What was the deal?

This was a brand new razor. I tried the razor one more time. Rinsed the remaining shaving cream off my leg. Still stubble. Ok, now I'm miffed, and feeling like I wasted my money. And worse, I have no razor with which to get a nice clean shave.

I jumped out of the shower, and grabbed the packaging that I had tossed in the trash so I could return it. When I looked at the directions on the packaging I noticed I had not put the blade on the handle correctly. It was upside down.

No wonder it wouldn't work. I was the one that wasn't working right. I didn't follow the package instructions.

I learned a lesson that day. Don't blame the creator of a product if you aren't following the directions. I didn't use the razor the way it was designed to be used; yet I was still expecting the razor to give me the results I wanted. And I was blaming the razor!

Know what? Sometimes we do this with prayer.

Many of us don't follow God's directions when we pray yet when prayer doesn't work, we blame God.

Fact: There are laws God put in place that govern what he will do for you and I. God isn't going to do what he told us to do.

And we wonder what the problem is. The problem is us. You. Me. We just don't do what we need to do to make things happen. Then we secretly think God failed us. We get bitter and blame him for not answering our prayer.

God is good. He wants to bless you beyond measure. But he won't violate the laws he has already put in place to give you what you need. You need to follow the instructions he has issued. Don't get upset with him if you know the cure but refuse to follow the treatment.

The Biggest Reason God Isn't Answering Your Prayers Could Be This:

You're not following his directions concerning what you need.

5 Examples of How You May Not Be Following His Directions When Praying:

1. Asking God to make the devil leave you alone.

James 4:7 says, Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. NLT

He told you how to do it - resist him. God doesn't have to lay a finger. He's already intervened. Now you do your part. Tell the devil you're not interested in what he has to say. Resist him.

2. Asking God to heal people. He commanded you to go heal the sick.

Matt 10:8 says, Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. NLT

Go lay hands on them and command their healing to take place. You don't have to ask.

3. Asking God for peace when he tells you how to get it.

Isa 26:3 says, You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! NLT

Fix your thoughts on God and give him your trust and peace will be yours.

John 14:27a says, I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.

Christ said he's already given you peace. No need to pray it - take it.

4. Asking God for the power to receive what his Word says you already have.

Isaiah 54:17 says, No weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you.

Psalms 8:6 says, You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority.

You don't have to ask for the blessings God's already promised you. Take your God given authority and tell your circumstances to line up with what God's Word says they should do.

5. Praying for relief yet you continue doing the very thing that causes your problem.

Galatians 6:7 says, Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.

Don't expect financial prosperity if you are blowing your money on grown up toys and running up your credit card debt on things you don’t need. Or don't expect God to heal you of lung disease if you keep smoking and refuse to stop. Don’t pray for God to make you all buff and muscly if you won’t work out. You get the picture. Sow what you want to reap.

You got this. Go do it. Follow God's directions instead of your own and you'll see more prayers answered.

Chime in. We’d love to hear from you. What could be other reasons God isn’t answering your prayers? How have you been following your own directions when you pray?

Prayers on Steroids – Here’s the Secret Sauce to Powerful Prayer

I want to share with you how you can have a powerful prayer life on steroids. Not everyone who prays gets the results they want because they don't go about it the right way. So I'm going to let you in on a secret that will get you results when you pray. You’re going to gain some muscle in your prayer life!

Though steroids are a drug that can be misused, the effects are incredible when used the right way. Steroids pump a person up, increase their strength and give them an incredible advantage.

If you grab this information and apply it, it will be like your prayers are on steroids. You will generate supercharged prayers that are strong and give you an incredible advantage in life.

As we know, not every prayer works the way we think it should. So let's figure out why. The Bible has a short little verse in James that goes like this:

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” (James 5:16 NIV)

Powerful, huh? Not always. Sometimes our prayers go flat because we pray for something that isn't God's will. A prayer outside of God's will is not effective. Let me give you a couple of examples.

A lot of times people pray prayers that are based on their emotions. That's dangerous, because our emotions are sometimes whacked! You know how it is when someone has cheated you, wronged you, or hurt you. Gosh, praying about a situation like that can be tricky.

Your flesh wants to pray that God will hunt that person down and smack them upside the head. But what you really should ask God to do is to show that joker their faults and bring them to apologize and change their ways. It might even be good to ask God to help you see if you had any wrong in the matter.

The Bible says to pray for our enemies and to bless them. Bless who? Our enemies. Are you out of your mind?! You would think so, unless you knew better. That's not how most people would deal with their enemies, but that's why most people don't have their enemies turn into friends.

The key to praying prayers on steroids is to pray God's will.

Pray for what God wants - not what you want. This is to your advantage if you can wrap your head around it.

God has an edge over you because he knows way more than you do! If you can get to a place where you trust what he wants is better for you than what you want - look out! He is ready to unload a truck-full of answered prayer on you.

So the big question is…How do you know God's will so that you supercharge your prayers with it?

You have got to get inside God's head!

That sounds a bit scary! And even intimidating. But it's not that hard. God wants to grant you access to his thoughts. That is why he gave you his thoughts on paper. It's the Bible; it’s God's Word.

So, how do you get inside God’s head? You get inside his word.

His word prepares our hearts to pray powerful and effective prayers. God’s word teaches us what to ask for. If you want to know God's will, you have to get in his word, so his thoughts get inside you.

And when his thoughts get inside you, you will begin to think like he does. And when you think like he does, you will know how to pray his will.

God's Word Trains Us to Pray

As you read the Bible every day, little by little your thoughts change. You quit thinking like the rest of the world and you begin to think more and more like God.

“...be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].” Romans 12:2 (AMP)

So did you catch that last part? It says you will be able to prove what the will of God is…what is acceptable and perfect in God's sight for you. How? By renewing your mind with God's word.

The Bible mentions Joshua who was faced with big challenges. It was his job to get the Israelites into the Promised Land. Basically, God told Joshua that the only way he would be successful is if he got in His word. Look how God unwrapped it here for Joshua in the Bible:

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” Joshua 1:8 (NLT).

The Word of God instructs us. It’s full of wisdom from God above. And if you really believe God is smarter than you are or ever could be you're going to want to tap into that knowledge.

When you do, you will become smarter in how you pray. The more you are in God's Word, the more your mind will be thinking like his, and the more your prayers will reflect his heart and will. Then guess what? The more your prayers will be answered.

So here's the secret sauce to powerful prayer:

Make time each day to read God’s Word, the Bible, so you can know how God thinks. His Word will begin shaping your prayers and it will be as if your prayers are on steroids!

The Biggest Thing That Kills Your Prayers & How to Get Rid of It Immediately

You've probably killed some of your prayers over your lifetime. I know I have! So what's the biggest thing that kills your prayers & how are you supposed to get rid of it?

Without a doubt..it's doubt!

We want to believe God's blessings.

But we don't.

How messed up is that?!

We sing about believing in the blessings and favor of God, but when it gets down to the nitty gritty, we don't believe all the way.

Sometimes the reason we don't believe all the way is because we've experienced delay.

But hey, even Jesus had to wait sometimes for his prayers to be answered. Who says it always comes immediately?

When Jesus spoke to the fig tree (Matthew 21:20) and told it to die - it didn't happen right away. Not that moment. Not 5 minutes later. Not 1 hour later. Nope. It wasn't even that night. It was the next day! That's when Peter came waltzing by and saw the results of Jesus' prayer.

Matthew 11:20

20 The next morning as Jesus was passing by with his followers, they saw the fig tree dry and dead, even to the roots.21 Peter remembered the tree and said to Jesus, "Teacher, look! The fig tree you cursed is dry and dead!"

Prayers aren't always answered instantly. I love what Laura, one of my blog readers said, "God doesn't put a done-meter on the outside of a sick person". But that doesn't mean prayer isn't working.

The tough thing is that waiting can cause us to doubt. But that's the very thing that will stop your payer from being answered.

Jesus said, speak to the mountain…if you believe in your heart and not doubt, the mountain will move.

Matthew 11:22

Jesus answered, "Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, 'Go, fall into the sea.' And if you have no doubts in your mind and believe that what you say will happen, God will do it for you. So I tell you to believe that you have received the things you ask for in prayer, and God will give them to you. (NCV)

Could it be any clearer? Don't let the waiting cause you to doubt. Waiting is sometimes necessary. Only God knows why. But if Jesus had to wait, then sometimes we will too. Here's a little action plan:

  • Believe when you pray
  • Keep believing
  • Keep believing some more
  • Don't let delay cause doubt
  • Hang in there till it it happens

That's how it works. If it's good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for us.

Look forward to the day when you come waltzing by the thing you spoke to and see that it did what you told it to do! Get rid of doubt so it doesn't kill your prayer.

How You Might Be Reversing the Prayers You’ve Been Praying in Faith

Have you ever found yourself saying the exact opposite of what you have been praying? Whoa Nelly! How can that be? Let me show you how negative statements can reverse the prayers you have been pleading to have answered.

One time when I was scheduled to speak at a conference I got the worst cold I can ever remember. I had so much snot bubbling out of my nose; it was red from constant wiping.

My head hurt. My body ached. For 3 days I couldn't breathe without doing so through my mouth. How was I supposed to speak for 45 minutes to a conference room full of people with my nose plugged to capacity?

I woke up that morning complaining. That's right. I was sick and I wanted God to know it. (As if he was unaware!) I said, "God, why would you allow me to be so sick the day I am scheduled to speak? I feel awful!" Know what happened? I felt worse and my body weakened. I wanted to go back to bed.

How Things Changed

Thankfully, as I was getting ready a verse of Scripture came to mind. It was Philippians 4:13 that says, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." So I said it out loud. Then I said, "My body is stronger and I am getting better."

Immediately I started to straighten up. Saying those words made my body come into agreement with what I was saying. I felt stronger. I felt better. I was determined to quit complaining which would have undermined my prayer. Had I kept saying how bad I felt, my body would have come into agreement with that instead.

Personal Prayer Sabotage

Sometimes we sabotage our own prayers by speaking the opposite of what we are praying. Can fresh water and salt water come out of the same spout? No! Negative statements that are opposite of what we are praying reverse what we are asking God to do.

For example, you pray something like this with great faith, "God, please heal my body." You even thank him for it. But within hours you're down at the coffee shop telling a friend, "Every day I get up my back is worse than the day before. My back will never get better.”

You're right!

You're back will never get better. Why? Because you are telling it what state to be in. Look, if you want to see your back pain go away, quit inviting it to stay.

You're going to get what you say. Think that's crazy? Jesus didn't. He told us to speak to the mountain and tell it to move. Paul in the Bible was gutsy too when he said, "Call things which are not as though they were." (Romans 4:17)

This wasn't my idea. This is God's. I'm just smart enough to believe it. Actually...I've seen it.

Jesus said…

Truly I tell you, whoever says to this mountain, Be lifted up and thrown into the sea! and does not doubt at all in his heart but believes that what he says will take place, it will be done for him. (Mark 11:23 AMP) (Underlining mine!)

James said…

A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything--or destroy it! (James 3:5 MSG)

You know people who want to loose weight right? I bet you also know people who want to loose weight and they let comments fly out of their mouth like, "I'm so fat!" Yikes! They're telling their body what it will be. Until they say, "I am loosing weight." they most likely won't. Their circumstances are going to line up with what they tell them to.

Or someone says, "I will never be able to afford a nice car or house." Yep. They won't. Why? Because they've declared it. Their words have creative power. And they will subconsciously believe what they say and they will act in ways that will bring about those results.

You will have what you speak.

Those who are careful about what they say protect their lives, but whoever speaks without thinking will be ruined. (Proverbs 13:3 NCV)

There is no greater way to ruin your life than speaking just anything that comes to your mind.

So here's a prayer tip: If you are trying to get a situation to line up with what you are praying - quit saying the opposite of what you want. Stop saying the opposite of what you are praying and believing. Your words have power. Circumstances are activated by what you speak.

Stop reversing your prayers with negative statements. Speak what you want, not what you have, and watch it take shape!

Prayers Without Emotion Are Just as Powerful

Ever thought that your prayer had to be emotional to be effective?

I admit it feels good to have emotions wash over me when I am spending time with God. Sometimes I am moved to tears as I pour out my heart. But at other times I have prayed almost completely void of emotion.

Many times I've had a blank stare piercing the heavens with no feeling behind it. I didn't feel like I could feel God's presence and I wondered if something was terribly wrong. Can you relate? Have you ever prayed this way?

James 5:16 says:

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (NKJV)

You might read this scripture and think you have "work up" your emotions for your prayer to pack power. But packing a punch in the spirit realm has more to do with your faith than it does your emotions.

Emotional Response is Not An Indicator of Faith

The mistake we sometimes make is measuring our prayer time by our emotional response. Know what? There will be times you pray with more emotion than others and it has more to do with your mental, physical, and emotional state than it does your prayer.

I'm sure you'll agree with me, some days you could cry buckets over a cup of spilled coffee. Other days, you take it in stride. Some days a car cutting you off on the highway can evoke strong emotions. And hopefully not strong words or hand gestures! Other days, you just let it roll off your back.

Factors Impacting Your Emotions When Praying:

  • How much sleep you've been getting
  • How much stress you are under
  • If you are not feeling well or are in pain
  • If you have a headache
  • Your personality and temperament
  • Your upbringing (some people were raised in a very non-emotional environment)

Our prayers do not hinge on feelings. They hinge on faith. The Bible doesn't say, "without feelings it is impossible to please God." NO! It says, "without faith, it is impossible to please God."

While a fervent passionate prayer avails much, the Bible doesn't say passionate prayers are the only ones that work with God. This verse is just stating that when you are in a fervent prayer mode - it reaches the heavens. This isn't the only kind of prayer that works. Other kinds of prayer do too. So don't feel bad if your prayers aren't drenched with emotion, soaked with tears, and unique facial contortions.

Pray in faith - and your prayer will be just as powerful!

The Key to Growing Miracles with Your Prayers

Cassie Hendon

This is a guest post by Cassie Hendon. Cassie is a worship leader and assistant at City of Life Church, Kissimmee, Florida. (She's one of my favorite vocalists and passionately pursues God in a big way. Get to know her better and what God’s putting in her heart by reading her blog at CassieHendon.com)

"How many of you need a miracle in your life?  Raise your hand."  As my pastor said these words at City of Life's Night of Visitation, the atmosphere was so full of faith it was palpable.  My eyes involuntarily filled with tears.  How many times had I stood there, raised my hand when asked this same question, and asked God for my miracle?  Fifty?  One hundred?  Five hundred?  Countless times.

We were gathered together that night to worship God.  To spend an entire service singing, praising, and honoring Him. So many times I had stood there asking for my miracle. I hadn't felt like praising Him.  The situation seemed too dark for praise.  Yet that night, as the tears welled up, I was filled with thankfulness. A joy unlike anything I'd felt in a long time.

My Miracle

For the first time in a long, long time, I didn't need a miracle.  God had answered my prayer. The Sunday prior, in a church over 1,000 miles away something changed. My dad stood in his pulpit and invited those who were far away from God to return to Him.  He asked those who needed God to stand. He wanted to pray with them for salvation.  Among those who stood - my brother.  My miracle.

Here's all I understand about answered prayer: we ask, God answers.  Sometimes He answers immediately; sometimes it takes months, years, decades.  This answer took over a decade to come.

There were times I grew weary praying for my brother's salvation. Times when I was the only one serving God in my family.  Times when, after talking to him and "taking the temperature" of his heart toward God, it seemed he was moving farther away from than closer to Him.

All I knew was God's will - that my entire family be saved (Acts 16:31).  There's such a beautiful rest we can enter into when we want the same thing that God wants.  God wants it, so we say "let your will be done, Lord" and know that the salvation of our family members is part of that package.

Dreams Do Come True

Last night I stood at the same place. And instead of asking for a miracle, I rejoiced.  I had finally received the thing that I had longed for.  I can only compare receiving an answer to prayer to Psalm 126. David describes it like being in a dream:

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,

we were like those who dreamed.

Our mouths were filled with laughter,

our tongues with songs of joy.

Then it was said among the nations,

“The Lord has done great things for them.”

The Lord has done great things for us,

and we are filled with joy.

Restore our fortunes, Lord,

like streams in the Negev.

Those who sow with tears

will reap with songs of joy.

Those who go out weeping,

carrying seed to sow,

will return with songs of joy,

carrying sheaves with them.

Your Prayer is a Seed

Every prayer you pray is a seed sown.  Many times our prayers are accompanied by tears of sorrow, tears of compassion, tears of distress.  Many times, these tears last for a long, long time.  Yet when you persist in prayer, you know that each prayer is a seed in the ground.

You can be certain that you WILL return to the place that you've planted those seeds of prayer, and the harvest you've prayed for will be abundant.  That's your miracle.  The tears pay off as your arms are so full of harvest that you can hardly hold it all.

My encouragement to you:  stay in the place of prayer.  When you don't think you have one more prayer in you for a specific person or situation, pray again.  Scrape together your faith and ask God for what's pressing on your heart just one more time.

I promise, He will answer.  You WILL receive your miracle.

What miracle have you been seeding for? How often have you felt like giving up on your miracle? Share with us in the comment section.

Why Doesn’t Jesus Heal Today Like He Did in the Bible? He Does!

I hear people ask from time to time, "Why doesn't Jesus heal people today like he did in the Bible?"

If you've ever wondered...he does! You just don't always hear about it. Listen to this story from a lady named Patty Wallace that proves my point.

Patty's Story

Two years ago Patty had muscular dystrophy. I say had because on Sunday morning April 18th, 2010, at 7am that all changed. That Sunday morning Jesus was up to his old tricks. I say that tongue and cheek because some wonder if he's still in the miracle working business. This proves he is.

Patty woke up to go to the restroom because she was sick. She thought she was coming down with a virus of some sort. She went back to bed and her husband brought her a washcloth. As she was wiping her face she was praying, asking God to heal her of the muscular dystrophy. What happened next was amazing.

Patty said that Jesus got right in her face, called her by name, and said: "Patricia Diane, how many times have you asked me to heal you? You ARE healed in my name. Get up and walk." Used to limping and dragging her right leg from the disease, she sat up.  God told her to get up and out of bed so she walked to the bathroom where her husband was cleaning up her mess. This time her walk was without a limp. She was no longer dragging her leg. And her seizures were no more.

What happened?

Jesus healed her. Just like he did for the people we read about in the Bible.
After Jesus returned, he walked along Lake Galilee and then climbed a mountain and took his place, ready to receive visitors. They came, tons of them, bringing along the paraplegic, the blind, the maimed, the mute—all sorts of people in need—and more or less threw them down at Jesus' feet to see what he would do with them. He healed them. When the people saw the mutes speaking, the maimed healthy, the paraplegics walking around, the blind looking around, they were astonished and let everyone know that God was blazingly alive among them. Matthew 15:30 (The Message)
What kind of miracle do you need? You could be next. Jesus does still heal today like he did in the Bible.

Dare to believe.

Special Invitation for you: If you are in the Central Florida area August 19th join us for a special healing service as Evangelist Daniel Kolenda ministers at City of Life Church at 7pm. You Were Meant to be A Prayer Hero – Here’s How

Everyone wants to be a hero. You do too. Don't try to shrug it off. It's in your nature. You were made that way. If you haven't made a difference in someone's life lately, I'm here to give you a kick in pants. Let me show you how making someone your Prayer Project can change their life and yours.

My First Prayer Project

I met Ms. Sweet in the 70's, when I was in middle school. She was my PE teacher. The first time I laid eyes on her, I thought, "This woman is a whack job!" She had the kind of voice you couldn’t get out of your head. She grunted when she talked. Or maybe barked would be a better description of her tone. She smelled like a chimney and her face was etched with deep scars from her past. I liked her--even though I could tell her life was a mess! She had gusto and she had spunk. I could tell she was trying to keep the glimmer in her eye, but she didn't know how. This lady made her wacky way into my heart.

Out on the softball field I'd pray, "God get a hold of Ms. Sweet's heart. Help her to find you. End her pain. God, help her to know that life is better with you in it." Everyday as I fielded balls and watched her yell and scream from the dugout, I'd secretly pray that someday she'd yell and scream out to God. I didn't let up. Every single day this little 6th grader prayed that God would transform her PE teacher's life.

Fast-forward to decades later, it's Sunday morning. I'm a pastor sitting on the stage at church. The service begins. I glance out at the crowd and I about fall out of my chair. Who did I see? Ms. Sweet! Not only was she in church, but she was raising her hands in worship. Smiling. Living. Enjoying. God answered my 6th grade prayer that had been hanging out there for decades. Ms. Sweet let God radically change her life. Prayer project accomplished!

Prayer Projects

What's a prayer project? Something that you decide you’re going to take on and change. Whether it is a person or a situation, you can be a change agent by stepping into prayer-hero mode!

See a need? Decide to take it on as a prayer project.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • When you see someone or a situation in need, ask yourself what needs to change here for them or for this situation?
  • Pray for that person/or need regularly.
  • Don't stop praying for this until the project is complete and your prayers have made a difference.

Where Do Ideas for Prayer Projects Come From?

Look around. All you have to do is open your eyes. As you begin to think like a prayer hero, you'll notice that ideas can come from anywhere. When you go to work, school, the store, or poking around on Facebook, pay attention to the way people move around and operate. Check the look on their faces; listen for the tone in their voices. Do they seem stressed? Impatient? Overwhelmed? Fearful? Sickly?

While thinking like this, you'll notice opportunities for prayer projects all around you. Get busy!

...Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know…. I Timothy 2:1 (MSG)

You have a world around you to change with your prayers. There's a hero inside of you waiting to make a difference. It's time. Go for it!

Prayer Booster: God, help me to be more aware of the people around me. Make me more sensitive to what they are dealing with in life. Show me how I can pray for them. Help me to be a difference maker in their lives and glorify you!

Are you ready to take on a prayer project? Have a prayer project you have taken on that can share with us? Tell us about it in the comment section. We want to know what God is doing through you so you can encourage other prayer hero’s!

The Secret to Never Forgetting to Pray for Anyone. Guaranteed.

I'm driving in my car on my way to my next appointment. I pass a car that looks like it could be someone I know. Suddenly my mind wanders over into, "Hey, I wonder how her mom's chemo treatments are going?"  I think: "I'll have to remember to pray for her later."

I arrive at my destination. I park and hop out of my car. My mind thinks back to a conversation I had with my daughter. She was concerned about a test she was taking. I'll have to remember to pray for that later too. I'll make a mental note.

Then I grab a cup of coffee and get seated at my meeting. I bump into Greg who tells me his neighbor was hit by a car last week. He's still in ICU fighting for his life. Wow! Add that one to the top of the list to pray for...later.

By now I've got quite a list going. Problem is - as important as these prayer needs are, they will fall off my list if I don't write them down.  And then even if I do, will I remember to grab the list before I start praying? Maybe. Maybe not.

So what usually happens?

My great intention to pray for all of these needs gets sidelined by busyness, distractions, and yep - my wandering mind. It's not that I intentionally forget to pray for these needs. I just don't remember.

Confession - I have a wandering mind. Researchers say that's because I have more brain capacity than most, which allows me to jump to other thoughts while on a task or subject. Hee hee! (Love that!) You too?! How smart we both are! But wandering thoughts get us in pickles. Especially when it comes to prayer.

Want to know the secret to never, EVER forgetting to pray for something or someone?

Pray it now!

Later may never come.

How bout the next time you realize someone needs prayer - you stop right there and pray? I've adopted this philosophy: When I can, when someone comes to mind, or when someone asks me to pray for them - I pray it now!

Eph 6:18 (AMP) says,

"Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty."

Pray It Now!

This means we can pray anytime, anywhere. We don't have to wait until we are in the right mood to pray. We don't even have to wait until we are in the right setting. Anytime, anywhere is a good time to whisper a prayer.

I'm not suggesting we give up our scheduled prayer time and switch to praying by the seat of our pants. No, we need to have a quiet time set aside where we can zero in on God with no other distractions. But when a prayer need becomes a distraction - because the need comes to mind - Pray it now!

Bet you'll make more of a difference in people's lives. And think, the next time you see that person who needs a prayer, you won't have to say: "Yeah, I'll be praying for you. You're on my FUTURE prayer list." Or, "I'll get around to praying for you - if I don't forget!" Nope! You can ecstatically say:  "I was praying for you the other day!"

Mission Accomplished. Feels good, right?!

Pray it now!

Has it been challenging for you remembering to pray for other people? When's the last time you dropped everything and prayed for someone who came to mind? Leave your reply in the comment section.

How God Uses You Through Prayer

Prayer is like improv theater. Ever watched "Who's Line Is It Anyway"? That show had me rolling on the floor! The American version of the popular British improvisational comedy show starred Drew Carey as the host. Carey would take suggestions from the audience and assign roles and scenarios to the comedian contestants, who then improvised a skit on the spot. If you need a good laugh, Google it. The reruns will have you in stitches!

In kind of the same way, C.S. Lewis wrote this about prayer and I just love it. In effect, he said,

The scene and the general outline of the story is fixed by the author (God), but certain minor details are left for the actors to improvise. It may be a mystery why He should allow us to be a change agent of sorts.

What Lewis was describing is like a scene from "Who's Line Is It Anyway" or any other improv theater. It's as if God gives us the outline but we are left to improvise. And we do so by our prayers. God uses prayer as the method to make things happen.

Why would God use prayer as the method of change?

I can only guess. But this I know: God made things happen with his words. He made things, created things, and changed things with the words he spoke. How did he create the world? By speaking it into existence. Words spoken bring change.

The Bible says we are called to imitate God.

If we are to do life like him, it's no surprise then that prayer is the method he chooses for us to intervene in the world. By our prayers we speak. And when we do, things take shape. Things move. Things happen. If it's the method God himself chose, it makes sense then that it's the method he chooses for us to use as well. He wants us to be like him. To speak like him.

Jesus told a fig tree to wither up and die. It listened. The next time he passed by - it was a goner! In fact, Jesus tells us to speak to the mountains that stand in our way. You can check it out. Look what Jesus told them:

I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it would move. Nothing would be impossible." Matthew 17:20 NLT

He actually instructed us to tell whatever stands in our way "where to go"! Bet there's a lot of people you'd like to tell where to go! Do it. But be nice!

Mark Batterson says in his book, The Circle Maker,

We control our world through prayer. What we speak occurs. Prayer is prophesy.

Prophesy is speaking something that is going to come to pass. Wow! If you have faith to make something happen by speaking to it - look out!

So prayer is like grabbing the outline that God has ordained and improvising or fleshing out the scene with our prayers. It's his method. When we use it, we change the world. Cool that he let's us do that!

And we don't just get to do it, we were told to do it. Genesis 1:26 (KJV) says,

Let us make man inn our image, in our likeness; and let them have dominion…over all the earth.

When God gave man dominion, he gave him the freedom to act as his authority figure on earth. So again, it's as if God sets the stage with the outline of his will. And we are the actors who improvise as we take dominion over the earth. We are told to make things happen, to take charge. This is why we pray. And this is why prayer changes things. And this is how God uses you through prayer.

Get ready to speak your lines. Prayer is not your prerogative; it's your assignment.

Who's line is it anyway?….It's yours. Speak!
