Kicking Your Bad Habits & Addictions Without Willpower

When I was overweight, I tried, tried, and tried to tackle the problem on my own - using my willpower. I'd succeed for a few days but then cave in again to eating what wasn't in my best interests. How's that for putting it mildly?

I believed that if I just had enough willpower I'd be able to get over the hump. I'd look for ways to increase my willpower. I'd zero in on my bad eating habits and try harder. But I'd fail. You too?

Ever wonder why you just can't seem to kick that nasty habit that's been tailing you for years? You think you've mustered up just enough will power to do the trick, you dig in and give it all you've got - only to be defeated once again. But this time you give up. It seems of no use.

Here's why your willpower won't work. And here's how you can kick bad habits and addictions for good without willpower!

First, why doesn't your willpower do the job?
Answer: To keep you from thinking it's all you.

When you think you're strong - you don't need God. And that's a dangerous place to live. Why? He can't help you if you don't need him. And obviously you do - because you keep failing on your own.

Fact: God loves to rush to your side giving you the strength you need to tackle your challenges.

When you say, "I've got this." I can do this. I have willpower" you are setting yourself up for failure because you're depending on your own strength.

Pride is at the Root of Willpower
You weren’t meant to have willpower. Will power is your own power that you slip into when you become prideful. That's right, pride is at the root of willpower.

You think you're big and bad enough to do anything you want to do. Guess what? You're not. But I bet you've already figure that out, haven't ya? So how about this...

Just Give Up - You Know you want to!
Why don't you just give up and lean on God? You've been wanting to give up anyway, right?!

Does the Bible say, "Be strong in the power of your might?"
No, it says, "Be strong in the power of his might."

So then, why do you keep thinking your willpower is going to get it done?

Hello?
Are you there?

Give up and let God Do It.

Ephesians 6:10b NLT: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

You don't need willpower. You need God's power. Give up and let God strengthen you. Yep, that will do the trick!

Pray This:
God, I have some things in my life that I want to put an end to. Yep, it's time to change some habits that are not in my best interest. I know you will give me the power to tackle these behaviors that have become so routine. Give me your power, the power that is at work within me. The power that comes through Christ. I'm grateful, thank you that you are going to help me tackle this and change. In Jesus Name.

If You’re Waiting On God, You’ll Be Disappointed

Have you ever said, “I’m waiting on God.”? Hmm, hate to be the one to break it to ya, but if that’s ever come out of your mouth, you’re gonna be disappointed. Big time.

So, on the subject of waiting, here’s a confession: I hate worship songs that are theologically incorrect. They make me shiver. Especially the one’s that encourage you to…yep... “wait on the Lord”.

Why?

Because these worship songs give us the wrong idea about God.

For instance… There’s a ton of songs with lyrics that go something like this:

“God, I’m waiting on you.”

“I’ll wait till you move.”

“I don’t mind waiting."

And there you sit or stand as a Christian believer… or hey, maybe you’re even face down on the floor...

Waiting.

Waiting some more.

Waiting to have a God-encounter.

Waiting for an epiphany.

But instead, you get disappointed that God hasn’t shown up in a real and tangible way like you thought he would.

Some people pray, "God come and be here with us.”

Seriously? You don't have to.

Remember that scripture in Hebrews 13:5 that says,

“ I will never leave you or forsake you.” ?!

Or how about Matt. 18:20 that says,

“Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

If you’re praying and asking for God to show up, it’s because you are being led by your senses, not by the truth of God’s Word.

You’re looking for a manifestation rather than kicking your faith in gear and believing that He is with you whether you feel Him or not.

Don’t let your senses fake you out.

Oh my goodness, listen, if you’re waiting on God to show up…you’re going to be let down.

And here’s why.

He’s already shown up. Jesus, has already provided everything you need. If you’re not seeing it manifest yet, it’s not God who hasn’t given it - it’s just that you haven’t received it yet.

Don’t be so passive. Reach out and receive.

Don’t sit there saying, “Well, I’m waiting on God to do something new.”

God has already provided an escape from your sins and healing for your brokenness. And bonus - he’s given you access to all the blessings in heaven.

So if you are waiting on him to move…news flash…He already did!

Ephesians 1:1-3 NLT

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

And the Bible says we ARE seated with Christ Jesus in heavenly realms. So, hey, since you are with him already - what’s with the wait?

Now it’s your move. Move closer to Him. Instead of asking Him to whisper something in your ear, why don’t you whisper something in His?

Say: "God, I know that your Word shows me that You’ve already blessed me. I thank you for what you’ve done! I am going to focus on you and your goodness."

And guess what? As you focus on what Jesus has already provided for you - you will draw out His abundant life from within you. Yeah, it’s already in there. It was given as soon as you believed.

So if things don’t change for you - STOP waiting.

Healing, prosperity, blessings, restoration, deliverance, etc, is all yours. You just need to believe it’s yours and it will come to you.

“All things are possible for those who believe.”

If you’re in Christ - there’s no wait.

Belly up to the table and enjoy!

Here’s a way you can pray for God to manifest Himself to you:

“God, you have told me in your Word that you will never leave me or leave me behind. I’m so grateful for that. And your Word promises that when two or three gather together, you are right there with them. So, I believe this and I’m asking you to show me how to yield to you. Show me how to walk in your presence. Show me how to believe that you are near. Thank you, In Jesus Name.”
