Prayer To Be More Effective Leader

Prayer to Be More Effective Leader

Picture This:

You've stepped up. You are among a smaller crowd now - the crowd of leaders. You've proven yourself faithful over little things, which has brought you bigger things. When you speak, people listen. When you lead, they follow. You are growing everyday. Learning from the best. And you're leading while serving. You're a leader after God's own heart.

Scripture This:

Matthew 20:26-28 NLT:

But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your c servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your d slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a e ransom for many.”

Luke 12:48b NLT:

When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.

Proverbs 16:21 NLT:

The wise are known for their understanding,

and pleasant words are persuasive.

Pray This:

God, I want to step into a position of leadership. Knowing that leadership starts with servant hood, I want to learn how to serve like you would. Show me how to cultivate the heart of a servant. Help me to be on the lookout for ways I can lend a hand and serve those I lead. As I step up to the plate I know you will require more of me. Give me wisdom and show me how to handle my new territory. Bring people and resources I can learn from, as I desire to be constantly growing as a leader. I am thankful for new things you are allowing me to step into and I desire to prove myself faithful and serve you in a way you will make you proud!

Say This:

I am a leader after God's own heart. He is my model and I pattern my way of leading after his. I am watching over those I serve, looking for ways I can help them and improve their lives. I seek to encourage them, understand them, and grow them. I will be sensitive to their needs. As I lead I will serve. I will pray for wisdom and look to God for help in the new territory his gives me as a leader.

How Praying Psalm 34 Can Put Your World at Ease

Last night was one of those nights. The kind where I tossed and turned. Got up to go to the bathroom. Then needed a drink. Sleep was not on my horizon. Know what I mean? So when I can't sleep, I reach for my phone and listen to a podcast. Sometimes I'll drift off to sleep as I'm listening, but if not, at least I'm using my time wisely.

My podcast episode of choice last night was Paula White Caine's, Hope for Today. She was exploring Psalm 34. Listen to it here: (PWHFT - Ep84 - A Season Of Overflow)

When I got up this morning I was still taken with chapter 34 in the book of Psalms. So I read it. Then I prayed it. It's written in first person so it's customizable. Can I tell you...

I love that Psalm! And here's why you'll love it too. It will put your world at ease.

Read it here. Then read it again out loud and you'll see how your perspective shifts.

You'll go away knowing in the very depths of your being that God is there. He cares. He knows. And he's gonna make everything o.k. for you.

I had an email from one of our readers in the Pray Like A Pro community a few days ago. He asked for tips on how to pray to his heavenly father. Elijah, I hope you're reading, cause this one's dedicated to you... 😉

Just read. Then read it out loud. Make it your prayer.

Psalm 34 (The Message Paraphrase):

1I bless God every chance I get;
my lungs expand with his praise.
2I live and breathe God;
if things aren’t going well, hear this and be happy:
3Join me in spreading the news;
together let’s get the word out.
4God met me more than halfway,
he freed me from my anxious fears.
5Look at him; give him your warmest smile.
Never hide your feelings from him.
6When I was desperate, I called out,
and God got me out of a tight spot.
7God’s angel sets up a circle
of protection around us while we pray.
8Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see—
how good God is.
Blessed are you who run to him.
9Worship God if you want the best;
worship opens doors to all his goodness.
10Young lions on the prowl get hungry,
but God-seekers are full of God.
11Come, children, listen closely;
I’ll give you a lesson in God worship.
12Who out there has a lust for life?
Can’t wait each day to come upon beauty?
13Guard your tongue from profanity,
and no more lying through your teeth.
14Turn your back on sin; do something good.
Embrace peace—don’t let it get away!
15God keeps an eye on his friends,
his ears pick up every moan and groan.
16God won’t put up with rebels;
he’ll cull them from the pack.
17Is anyone crying for help? God is listening,
ready to rescue you.
18If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there;
if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath.
19Disciples so often get into trouble;
still, God is there every time.
20He’s your bodyguard, shielding every bone;
not even a finger gets broken.
21The wicked commit slow suicide;
they waste their lives hating the good.
22God pays for each slave’s freedom;
no one who runs to him loses out.

I hope you'll sleep good tonight. I know I will because Psalm 34 has put my world at ease. You too?

4 Things That Happen When You Trust God Completely

Trust. It's not easy to do, is it? Especially if you've been disappointed time after time after time. Let me show you 4 things that happen when you trust God completely with every area of your life.

A man just got married and was returning home with his wife. They were crossing a lake in a boat, when suddenly a storm kicked up. The man was a warrior, he was brave and not bothered by the storm. But his wife was very much afraid because it seemed almost hopeless.

The boat was small and the storm was really huge, and any moment, it looked like they were going to go under. But the man sat silently, calm and quiet, as if nothing was happening.

His wife was trembling and she said, “Aren't you afraid ? This may be our last moment of life! It doesn’t seem that we will be able to reach the other shore. If we don't see a miracle take place, we're going to die.

The man laughed and took the sword out of its sheath. The woman was even more puzzled. What he was doing? Then he brought the naked sword close to the woman’s neck, so close it was almost touching her neck.

He said,  "Are you afraid ?”

She started to laugh and said, "Why should I be afraid ?, If the sword is in your hands, why I should be afraid? I know you love me."

He put the sword back and said, "And just like that, I know God Loves me, and the storm is in His hands."

When you trust God, you're going to experience:

1. New levels of peace and joy. You'll begin to experience the magnificent, abundant life Jesus paid for you to have. You'll no longer be bogged down by fear or worry. Trust puts an end to crazy frantic days because you know Jesus is going to come through for you.

And God's peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:7 AMP

2. Greater Victories. Trusting God to fight your battles guarantees you an ultimate win. Every time. Though, if you'd rather fight off your enemies on your own, go for it, but you won't be victorious every time. So why not trust God to fight your battles? When you do, you're victories will become greater and bigger as you trust him more.

Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5 AMP

3. New opportunities. Each new day will bring a new opportunity to trust in his strength. And I must warn you - with each new opportunity a challenge will come your way. But don't worry, if you are trusting in God 100 percent, you're going to be just fine!

And Jesus said, [You say to Me], If You can do anything? [Why,] all things can be (are possible) to him who believes! Mark 9:23 AMP

4. A deeper relationship with God. Trust deepens any relationship. Friendship, marriage, family - no matter what the type of relationship, if trust is there, the relationship grows. Trust God and you'll be drawn closer to him. It's a central principle for all relationships. Trust and you'll be tighter with God.

The sheep that are My own hear and are listening to My voice; and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27

Today, I want to encourage you to make up your mind that you are going to believe God is for you and put that faith into action by trusting him.
You'll experience new levels of peace and joy, greater victories, new opportunities, and a deeper relationship with God. You're about to see these 4 things happen when you trust God completely with every area of your life.

How To Ask For What You Want

Do you find it hard sometimes expressing your desires to God? Have you ever worried that God may find you pushy or demanding? Or worse, you fear that your prayer will be turned down? Here are 3 things that will help you when you're wondering, how to ask God for what you want.

Asking God for what you want and need is a necessary part of life. And the more you practice it, the easier it becomes.

  1. Ask without fear.

Fear is an obstacle that blocks your capacity to receive. And I’m not just talking about the fear of making your voice heard. I’m also talking about the fear of getting what you want and realizing it’s NOT what you’d hoped it would be.

You may also fear losing it, and the fear of what will happen if you don’t get it. These are all very common, and they can get in the way of going after the things you yearn for most.

Here’s something to bank on. You can be fearless If you’re asking God for anything He says you can have in the Bible – because He’s already said you can have it.

Be brave and ask for what God says you can have – no fear necessary!

  1. Ask with trust.

When you don’t believe you deserve what you’re asking for - and if you don’t believe you’re worthy – you’re not going to be open to receiving it, and you probably won’t get it.

Say this with me OUTLOUD: “I won’t get it if I don’t trust God to give it.”

Did that sink in?

Ok, now say THIS:

“All things are possible for those who believe.” (Matthew 19:26)

All things are possible for who?

Those who believe.

That’s trust. Use it and get what you’re asking for!

  1. Ask without expectations.

When you want something you might be required to ask more than once - And you can’t get too attached to how receive it.

Sometimes God’s delivery truck looks different than what we would expect.

Back in college, I remember praying for a certain young man to wake up one day and realize I was the greatest catch on the planet. I wanted him to marry me. I expected to have his last name.

Guess what? Didn’t happen.

But God did answer my prayer and give me a husband that is amazing and better for me than what I was asking for. Had my expectation been met, I would have hooked up with the wrong guy.

I’m glad God doesn’t always give me what I’m expecting!

If you want love, Pray for love. But know that it might take a while and it may not come from the person you expect.

If you want a satisfying career, understand that you make get it, but it may not be in the field, position, or timeframe you thought it might come in.

So write these down inside your Bible or prayer journal and let them help you guide your prayers:

  1. Ask without fear.
  2. Ask with trust.
  3. Ask without expectations.

That’s how you ask for what you want. If you liked this, please share it!

Little Prayer Tip Makes Your Prayers More Energized and Laser Targeted

When I was a kid I thought if I wasn’t praying on my knees - my prayers weren’t as powerful. Crazy thought, huh? Oh, you too? Yes, let’s be honest, we’ve all wondered if we had to be in a certain posture to experience potent prayer results.

I watched my grandma and grandpa, both mega prayer warriors, pray that way. When I’d spend the night at grandma’s house, before bed, she’d get down on her knees and pray.

Now, I loved my grandma dearly, gramps too, but now I know, praying on my knees is not the ONLY way to pray. Especially if you have knee problems!

Today, I want to give you a tip that will get you on your feet so you can feel more energized during your prayer time and create laser targeted prayers.

You may have heard studies about of standing while working on the computer or at a desk. And there’s been a lot of talk lately explaining the advantages of “stand up” desks. It increases productivity as well as decreases obesity (Win. Win.)

Ok, so what’s the big deal about stand up desks and what does this have to do with prayer?

We think better when we are on our feet.

A study from the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health finds students with standing desks are more attentive than their seated counterparts.

In fact, preliminary results show 12 percent greater on-task engagement in classrooms with standing desks, which equates to an extra seven minutes per hour of engaged instruction time. (Click here for original article on

If we think better when we’re on our feet, then we’re going to pray better when we’re on our feet. Why?

It's because our thoughts direct our prayers.

When was the last time you tried to pray without thinking? ...Ok, bad question, because we do whip out little prayers without thinking, don’t we?!

But, if you’re wanting to be laser focused in prayer so you can really zero in on something that needs to change, you’ll get more out of that prayer if you’re thoughts are clear, and you’re full of energy.

In fact, right now as I type this, I'm standing at my standup desk. Yep, I'm standing in my Nike Roshe Running Shoes, because that's what I wear when I have a lot of desk work to accomplish and I want to stand comfortably for long periods of time.

Working at my standup desk makes me more productive, and have more energy which makes me feel better about what I'm doing too. And might I add, more fun.

So guess what I do when I pray?

I usually slip into my Nike’s, (or other comfort shoes) and I pray while I'm standing or walking around my room. (Or walking around the back yard or neighborhood - my two other favorite prayer spots.)

I find I have more energy and focus if I'm standing or walking while praying.

It's no secret, that moving gets your brain pumping and clicking on all cylinders.

So if standing while working at a desk helps you to stay focused and accomplish more, then standing while praying will help you pray prayers that are more laser targeted and energy infused too.

On top of all that, it just makes prayer more exciting and fun. And who wouldn't want that?

So, again, I'm not saying the only way to pray is standing or walking. I'm just encouraging you to give it a try and you'll find too, that you're more engaged and energized when praying.

Ever Wondered, “Am I Out Here All Alone?”

You too?

Good, we're not alone after all!

If you've ever wondered, Has anyone else ever experienced the kinds of problems I'm experiencing right now, or am I out here all alone?...

No, you're not alone. I'm right there with ya!

I love that Hebrews 11 records people just like us who had to fight and struggle as they waited for that thing they were "faithing" for to happen. Their walk of faith was a great big audacious challenge. Just like the one you and I are facing today.

And because those Old Testament saints stayed with it - yes, stayed with what God told them to do, stayed hopeful in the midst of bad news, stayed at it and didn't give up - even though they wanted to...

They got what they were waiting for!

Can you shout YIPPIE!!!

Ok, I'm being a little over the top, but seriously, WHAT IF today was the day you received what you've been praying for?

And the idea that you are not! ...look at it in Hebrews 12:1. It says that "we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses".

The phrase "compassed about" is taken from a compound of the words peri and keimai, which is Greek to you, but the words mean around or to be completely encircled by something. The second part of the word keimai, means to lie down.

Put them together and this is what you get...

Something that has been piled high and is lying all around you on every side. This is a picture of being encircled by something that is stacked high on every side.

What's stacked high all around you on every side?

Witnesses who have been in your shoes, but hung in there and made it through. And they're watching on the sidelines of your life, so that you know, you can do it too, just like they did.

You're surrounded by people like:

  • Abraham
  • Sarah
  • Jacob
  • Noah
  • Joseph
  • Moses
  • Gideon
  • Barak
  • Samson
  • David

Hebrews 12:1 says there are so many of them that they are literally lying all around you! (Go here if you want to read the whole chapter.)

And if you look closely, you'll see that there are many of these "not-gonna-give-up" people living on the planet with you. Alive and well.

In fact, if you want to hear a really amazing story about one who was almost at the point of giving up...she received bad news, more bad news, and more bad news...but...

She hung in there and saw a miracle that charged her faith and it will charge your's too.

Check out this week's podcast, "What Can a Dog Teach You About Hope" and you'll hear the story of Murphy the Miracle Dog who had cancer.

HAD Cancer.

Past tense.

She's laying around you today too. Click here, if you want to hear her story and be encouraged in your fight.

Don't let the devil talk you into believing you're the only one who has faced what your going through right now. You're not alone! Email me if you want me to pray for you specifically. I'll add your name and situation to my personal prayer list.

The Secret to Prayer & Bible Reading is Sweatpants

So you want to bump up your prayer time, right? You want to get consistent with praying & daily Bible reading and get yourself into a good routine. Want to know the secret to pulling it off?

Not a sweatpants kinda guy or gal? No sweat. (ha ha) the point is...

Get comfortable.

You’ll never find me having a long talk with God wearing high heals. Unless I’m stuck in a situation where I can’t take them off!

My favorite prayer shoes…Sockwa’s. They're ugly but comfy. Because if I'm comfortable, I'll stick around longer, I'll be able to focus better, and I'll have a more enjoyable experience.

My talk with God will be more appealing. I know, you're thinking, "Is she that carnal?" Yes, I am. I'm real. And if I can't get comfortable, I'm going to spend less time in my prayer zone.

And here's a little confession: I don’t even kneel!

If I did, I again, wouldn’t spend as much time praying - because my knees would be hurting before I’m done. If I’m comfortable, I’ll pray longer.

So look, the idea here is to get over the idea of having a stuffy conversation with the Divine. I'm sure God would like for you to kick back, relax, and enjoy the moment with him.

And while we're at it, let's talk about Bible reading and how we can make that easier.

If you’re tired of daily Bible reading plans that land you in guilt city like I was, move on over to a no-pressure plan that will refresh your soul.

When I was in college I bought a Chronological Daily Bible. Along with others I thought it would be an great accomplishment to read the Bible through in one year. I started countless other “Read the Bible in a Year” plans but never finished. Maybe you’ve done this too.

This time though, I determined, “I’m going to make this work.” After all, the Daily Bible I bought broke the reading into segments so I could finish it within a year – IF I was faithful to read everyday. And when I say read everyday, I mean read a BIG honking chunk everyday. But sadly here’s what happened…

Problems With My Daily Bible Reading Plan That You May Have Experienced Too:

It became a chore rather than something I enjoyed. I no longer looked forward to my time in God’s Word. It had become a rountine rather than a refreshing that I desperately needed.

My goal became reading to finish instead of reading to be replenished. Reading for the sake of completing rather than reading for the sake of understanding. Reading for accomplishment instead of reading for communion.

When I got behind, it was tough to catch up. Two days trying to catch up was even harder, three days – forget it. (That’s when most people give up.)

My conclusion: What ‘s the big deal about reading the entire Bible within a year anyway? Is a year the magic number that will usher you into a bigger blessing of some sort?

So here I am, a student of the Word, who has spent over 20 years in full time ministry, have a degree in pastoral theology, have taught thousands and thousands of people from the Bible, yet still I have NEVER read the entire Bible through in one year’s time. I have read the Bible from cover to cover, yes, but not crammed within the time frame of one year.

So shoot me!

Does that make me any less serious about studying God’s word? No, that makes me smarter.

No-Pressure Reading…

I will not bow to the customs and traditions and whims of men and women. I will enjoy every time I read my Bible because I do so with no pressure. It’s just me and God. Slowing down and giving him time to speak. Slowing down and allowing myself time to hear.

There are days I read multiple chapters depending on:

  • How much time I have.
  • What I am studying (If I am working or researching for a teaching or a writing project).
  • What I feel God is leading me to do that day.

There are days I read only a verse or two depending on:

  • How much time I have.
  • What God is trying to show me in what I just read.
  • When I begin praying that scripture over my life and over the lives of my loved ones and camp out there because I am so moved by it.

Know what kind of Bible reading blesses me and brings me freedom from pressure?

Taking It Slow.

When I take it slow and enjoy the tasty morsels God’s throwing into my mouth I’ve hit the sweet spot. Sometimes I read one verse and stop. I chew on that verse, thinking about it, muling it over in my mind all day long. As I do, God speaks multiple things to me about one little verse. It’s like swallowing a sip of coffee with multiple complexities. I savor the flavors being uncovered at every level.

Biting Off More Than You Can Chew

If you take too big of a chunk of scripture you can’t get as much out of it. It’s like putting too much food in your mouth and being forced to chew fast and swallow. Not as enjoyable as when you have time to savor every bite.

So Here’s a No-Pressure Bible Reading Plan:

  • Take just one bite of scripture at a time.
  • Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
  • Give the scripture time to digest.
  • Enjoy it!

So give yourself a fresh new Bible reading plan without guilt or pressure. It will taste better and will do your spiritual body good! Be free. Taste and see that The Lord is good!

4 Phrases That Will Push You Through A Tough Time

You wake up - but you're not so sure it's gonna be a great day. Times are tough for you and you're uncertain things are going to work out. Is that where you are today? If so, I've got 5 phrases that will push you through your tough time.

Get these in your head. Get em in your heart. Write em out on an index card, post it note, or make them your screen saver on that techy smart-phone you have.

Here's your Push-Me-Through-A-Tough-Time List:

  1. I CAN - Yes, say it like you mean it! Philipians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." There ya go. Whatever's required, you got it. Whatever it takes, it's in you.
  2. I WILL FINISH - You may have just started or you may started so long ago that you can't remember it. But it's not over. You're not over. Philipians 1:6 lets you know, God's going to finish what he started in you. You are finishing. Period.
  3. I WILL FIGURE THIS OUT - When confusion slaps you hard and you don't know how to solve your dilemna, hang on to 1 Corinthians 10:13. "All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he'll never let you be pushed past your limit; he'll always be there to help you come through it." (MSG). Your answer is on the way - it'll come to you.
  4. I WILL BE OK - You may not feel ok right now. You may have to swallow this over and over until you get it in your "knower". But I KNOW what Romans 8:28 says about you... All things will work out for good in your life because you love The Lord and you are pursuing him.

Ok, now with these 4 phrases, let's shape a prayer around them so you can keep pushing when you feel like quiting....

God, I need your strength to push me through this tough time. I've been on the edge and I've felt like quitting. But I'm pulling on your strength to get me around this corner. With you, I CAN do all the things that seem too hard for me. I've got what it takes, and I'm feeling a tinge of energy coming through me already. I WILL FINISH with you're help and direction. I know you are for me and want to see me succeed. I WILL FIGURE THIS OUT as you whisper answers in my ear and give me the ideas I need. I WILL BE OK because you said I will be ok. All things are working in my favor and I know you see me. Thank you that I'm not alone through this time. Thank you that you are rushing to my side and rescuing me. In Jesus Name.

How Do You Shut Down Voice of Accusation and Sweep Your Mistakes Under the Rug?

How Do You Shut Down Voice of Accusation and Sweep Your Mistakes Under the Rug?

Your sitting at a stop light. It's been 3 seconds since it turned red to green. The guy in front of you is not moving. Instead, he's looking at his phone. You're late. You're honking.

He doesn't move because he's jamming to his favorite beat and doesn't hear your horn.

You're seriously thinking about pulling up to his bumper and giving it a little love tap. But then something takes over, you lay down on your horn, give him the finger, and the nastiest look you can muster.

Oh, yeah, and you're a Christian.

Good thing you peeled that fish bumper sicker off your car last week. Wouldn't want to give believer's a bad rap.

The guy finally figures out the light is green but now yellow. Looks in his mirror and gives you a "sorry wave" then drives off. But you're stuck, cause the light is red again. And you still can't get through.

Now your cussing. You're adrenaline is pumping. You feel like fighting.

Oh, yeah, and did I're a Christian?

So now you hear a voice. Something like this:

  • "Why would God give you favor for your important meeting today?"
  • "Look how easily you lose your cool on the road. How can you expect good things to happen to you?"
  • "You call yourself a Christian? When was the last time you prayed? What good have you done for your fellow man lately?"
  • "Why should God heal your mother of cancer?"
  • "Why should God give you a raise?"
  • "Why should God help you graduate at the top of your class?"

Do these sound familiar?

Here's how you can shut down that voice of accusation AND sweep your mistakes under the rug!

You get a grip and clear your head. You remember what the Bible says about your stupidity.

Justice and right will make you strong. You will be safe from oppression and terror. Isaiah 54:4

But looking at that verse, here's what's easy to get twisted. You're thinking it's your right that will make you strong. But it's not. (You're not righteous enough in your actions, remember the red light incident?)

It's Christ's right that makes you strong. And that's what makes you safe from oppression (that accusing voice).

See the difference?

You're established on Jesus' righteousness, not your own.

Not your good behavior. Not your stellar rage-less moments. Nothing you can do can make you right. It's all based on how right Jesus was. And since he decided to trade places with you, you take on his righteousness.

I no longer have a righteousness of my own, the kind that is gained by obeying the Law. I now have the righteousness that is given through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is based on faith. Philipians 3:9 GNB

Now, here's how you sweep it all under the rug and erase the past:

Now that you're conscious that the Lord has made you righteous, you have the strength to stay cool the next time road-rage hits.

Or the next time, you feel like flicking someone off.

Or the next time you feel like blowing up like a volcano because your kid has failed to clean their room and take out the trash.

Or even the bigger, tougher moments...

When crap hits the fan, you run out of gas, you forget to pay your credit card bill, you slip up and say something totally uncalled for...

You get it, don't ya?

Knowing Christ has made you right means you can apologize to those you wrong and you can decide to do it differently next time.

Here's how you can pray:

God, help me to get a grip on my righteousness in  Christ. Help me to understand what I have through your son. When I've failed, I choose to see myself as you do - in Christ's righteousness. Clean. Pure. Forgiven. And the more I understand this, the quicker I will be to shut down the voice of the accuser when he comes to me - so that your unmerited favor will work for me. Thank you for making me right in Christ, even though I don't deserve it.

Like this? Tweet it so someone else can shut down that stinking accusing voice!

Kicking Your Bad Habits & Addictions Without Willpower

When I was overweight, I tried, tried, and tried to tackle the problem on my own - using my willpower. I'd succeed for a few days but then cave in again to eating what wasn't in my best interests. How's that for putting it mildly?

I believed that if I just had enough willpower I'd be able to get over the hump. I'd look for ways to increase my willpower. I'd zero in on my bad eating habits and try harder. But I'd fail. You too?

Ever wonder why you just can't seem to kick that nasty habit that's been tailing you for years? You think you've mustered up just enough will power to do the trick, you dig in and give it all you've got - only to be defeated once again. But this time you give up. It seems of no use.

Here's why your willpower won't work. And here's how you can kick bad habits and addictions for good without willpower!

First, why doesn't your willpower do the job?
Answer: To keep you from thinking it's all you.

When you think you're strong - you don't need God. And that's a dangerous place to live. Why? He can't help you if you don't need him. And obviously you do - because you keep failing on your own.

Fact: God loves to rush to your side giving you the strength you need to tackle your challenges.

When you say, "I've got this." I can do this. I have willpower" you are setting yourself up for failure because you're depending on your own strength.

Pride is at the Root of Willpower
You weren’t meant to have willpower. Will power is your own power that you slip into when you become prideful. That's right, pride is at the root of willpower.

You think you're big and bad enough to do anything you want to do. Guess what? You're not. But I bet you've already figure that out, haven't ya? So how about this...

Just Give Up - You Know you want to!
Why don't you just give up and lean on God? You've been wanting to give up anyway, right?!

Does the Bible say, "Be strong in the power of your might?"
No, it says, "Be strong in the power of his might."

So then, why do you keep thinking your willpower is going to get it done?

Are you there?

Give up and let God Do It.

Ephesians 6:10b NLT: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

You don't need willpower. You need God's power. Give up and let God strengthen you. Yep, that will do the trick!

Pray This:
God, I have some things in my life that I want to put an end to. Yep, it's time to change some habits that are not in my best interest. I know you will give me the power to tackle these behaviors that have become so routine. Give me your power, the power that is at work within me. The power that comes through Christ. I'm grateful, thank you that you are going to help me tackle this and change. In Jesus Name.

If You’re Waiting On God, You’ll Be Disappointed

Have you ever said, “I’m waiting on God.”? Hmm, hate to be the one to break it to ya, but if that’s ever come out of your mouth, you’re gonna be disappointed. Big time.

So, on the subject of waiting, here’s a confession: I hate worship songs that are theologically incorrect. They make me shiver. Especially the one’s that encourage you to…yep... “wait on the Lord”.

Because these worship songs give us the wrong idea about God.

For instance… There’s a ton of songs with lyrics that go something like this:

“God, I’m waiting on you.”

“I’ll wait till you move.”

“I don’t mind waiting."

And there you sit or stand as a Christian believer… or hey, maybe you’re even face down on the floor...

Waiting some more.

Waiting to have a God-encounter.

Waiting for an epiphany.

But instead, you get disappointed that God hasn’t shown up in a real and tangible way like you thought he would.

Some people pray, "God come and be here with us.”

Seriously? You don't have to.

Remember that scripture in Hebrews 13:5 that says,

“ I will never leave you or forsake you.” ?!

Or how about Matt. 18:20 that says,

“Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.”

If you’re praying and asking for God to show up, it’s because you are being led by your senses, not by the truth of God’s Word.

You’re looking for a manifestation rather than kicking your faith in gear and believing that He is with you whether you feel Him or not.

Don’t let your senses fake you out.

Oh my goodness, listen, if you’re waiting on God to show up…you’re going to be let down.

And here’s why.

He’s already shown up. Jesus, has already provided everything you need. If you’re not seeing it manifest yet, it’s not God who hasn’t given it - it’s just that you haven’t received it yet.

Don’t be so passive. Reach out and receive.

Don’t sit there saying, “Well, I’m waiting on God to do something new.”

God has already provided an escape from your sins and healing for your brokenness. And bonus - he’s given you access to all the blessings in heaven.

So if you are waiting on him to move…news flash…He already did!

Ephesians 1:1-3 NLT

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

And the Bible says we ARE seated with Christ Jesus in heavenly realms. So, hey, since you are with him already - what’s with the wait?

Now it’s your move. Move closer to Him. Instead of asking Him to whisper something in your ear, why don’t you whisper something in His?

Say: "God, I know that your Word shows me that You’ve already blessed me. I thank you for what you’ve done! I am going to focus on you and your goodness."

And guess what? As you focus on what Jesus has already provided for you - you will draw out His abundant life from within you. Yeah, it’s already in there. It was given as soon as you believed.

So if things don’t change for you - STOP waiting.

Healing, prosperity, blessings, restoration, deliverance, etc, is all yours. You just need to believe it’s yours and it will come to you.

“All things are possible for those who believe.”

If you’re in Christ - there’s no wait.

Belly up to the table and enjoy!

Here’s a way you can pray for God to manifest Himself to you:

“God, you have told me in your Word that you will never leave me or leave me behind. I’m so grateful for that. And your Word promises that when two or three gather together, you are right there with them. So, I believe this and I’m asking you to show me how to yield to you. Show me how to walk in your presence. Show me how to believe that you are near. Thank you, In Jesus Name.”

Why God Doesn’t Serve You Leftovers

Need a touch of God's mercy but not sure he's willing to give you a fresh dose? Good news: God doesn't do leftovers!

Read below or listen to the podcast.

I have a confession to make: The only time I like leftovers is when I’m not in the mood to cook!

Like last night.

I was tired. I had a tough day solving problems and technical issues on one of my websites as well as conflicts with booking speaking engagements.

At the end of yesterday when my family was asking, "Mom, what’s for dinner?"

I didn’t have it in me to lift a finger. Have you been there?

I just didn’t even want to invest any energy even thinking about what I could whip up because I had nothing planned nothing!

I looked at my 16 yr old daughter and said sheepishly…

She wasn’t thrilled.

How about you? Do you like leftovers?

I typically don’t like leftovers unless they are YUMMY!

So have you been in a spot where you looked up at God and said, "What have you got for me?

I’m hungry in the relationship area. I’m hungry in the health arena. I’m hungry in my job for a promotion… "God, what have you got for me?”

Listen: You will NEVER hear God say: "Leftovers!"

Here’s how I know God doesn’t do leftovers:

His mercies are new every morning.

Look at what the Bible says in Lamentations 3:22-23

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (ESV)

I Love that last line - "Great is thy faithfulness"…even when I’m not.

Yep, God is faithful to you even when you’re not faithful to him.

That’s mercy! That’s grace!

And he doesn’t assess what you’ve done that day or haven’t done - and say – “Nope, you haven’t done enough for me or others today - So I’m not giving you something new - You’re just getting leftovers!”

NO! His mercies are new every morning.

  • Some mornings you may need more patience than others.
  • Some days you may need more love for a coworker.
  • Some days you may need a little more strength to get the job done, or the house cleaned, or the oil changed or the diapers changed.
  • Some days you need more strength to get through a chemotherapy treatment.
  • Some days you need more help than others.

Know what? God doesn’t serve up what’s left over from the day before!
He serves up something fresh and new!

Unlike me - I turn to leftovers when I’m too tapped out to cook or lacking time. God’s got his world under more control than I do.

He’s capable of whipping up something new for you every morning. Every day. He has unlimited resources!

So to you who’s marriage is falling apart, yes, you, the one who wrote to me and said your husband walked out on you... God’s got new mercies for you tomorrow morning.

You who wrote me and said you're weak from sickness and disease - God has new mercy for you today.

You who are depressed and down - God’s mercies are waiting for you today. And he’s got everything you could possibly need to get you through your day. And the next day and the next day!

Reminds me of the scripture, Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. (ESV)

Let me paraphrase that - Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow you - all the days of your life.

God’s mercies are new for you every morning. And, they're going to follow you through out your day!

God doesn’t do leftovers - aren’t you glad!

How to Hang Onto Your Healing

How to Hang on to Your Healing

If you’re wondering how to hang on to your healing let me give you a few pointers!

I had this great idea that when I turned 40. I would bite the bullet and compete in a triathlon. I am fit. I work out every day. And I thought, shoot, I can handle this. I am in just as good a shape as most 20 something’s.

I love swimming, so that shouldn't be a problem; I used to swim laps every day anyway. I love biking, that would be a synch, the breeze coming at me at top speed invigorates me. But I hate running. That would be the booger!

I do run. In fact I like the feeling I get after a run, and that high that comes from pushing through the wall. But I still don't like to run. Partly because I have always had knee problems. The culprit: torn ligaments and tendons that never received the proper recovery time because I don't like sitting still. And I pay for it dearly. It has always kept me from running comfortably for more than 2 miles at a time.

I still really wanted to complete this triathlon. So I started training. My best friend bought me an "Iron-woman" triathlon watch for Christmas so I could keep track of my times. I had the bike. I had the sports clothes and athletic shoes. Yes, I had all the gear, but I still didn't have a good knee. It wouldn't cooperate. Most days I pushed through the pain but eventually I realized if I didn't get this knee fixed I was not going to make it.

The problem with getting my knee fixed was that surgery was required. And like I said, I can't stand the thought of being down. I work out almost every day and to me the 6-week downtime while recovering sounded like a death sentence. I require movement. I rarely sit still unless I am reading or working on my laptop or ipad. I couldn't imagine being immobile for 6 weeks. So I decided to quite training for the triathlon.

This didn't fix my knee problem. Flash forward 4 years later (I'm now 44) and Iwas still having pain in my knee. It slowed me down when doing my Insanity Workouts. Not fun. But one day I realized something.

Something every believer needs to realize.

We don't have to live with pain. We can receive a healing and keep it.

I know. I know. You're wondering how.

First you've got to know that God's Word has the key to our healing.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says,

My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings.Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart. For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.(AMP)(Bold letters mine for emphasis.)

Second, God's Word point blank says that Jesus paid the price for your healing.1 Peter 2:24 says, He personally carried our sins in his body on the crossso that we can be dead to sinand live for what is right.By his wounds you are healed. (NLT) (Bold letters mine for emphasis.)

With that knowledge under your belt

Here's the key to keeping your healing:

*You have to hold on to your healing by what you think and say.

Once you realize Christ grants you full healing, and you can believe for it, you have to fight for it. And fight you will because here's what usually happens - You start to feel better but then in time you feel a symptom return. A little bit of pain comes back. Or the swelling returns. Or you see some other manifestation.

What's happening here is that the enemy is trying to get you to focus on what you see and feel in the natural instead of focusing on the truth in the supernatural.

Why the Enemy Wants You to Speak Against Your Healing

He’s trying to get you to say the opposite of what God gave you. Satan knows what you speak is what will come to pass. That’s why he wants you to speak how you feel instead of speaking what you know. He knows the power of your words.

The truth of God's Word is this - you have been given healing. So - you can't, can't, can't begin to think like the enemy does. And you certainly can't, can't, can't begin to speak like he does.

Resist the enemy by resisting the urge to say how you feel physically. Spin it around and say, I know God healed me and I am going to feel it. I am getting better. My strength is returning. My sickness is leaving. I am healthy and whole.

How to Lose Your Healing

Don't change your confession of your words. This is where you can loose your healing. You have to hold on to your faith confession.

Look at what Hebrews 10:23 says:Let us hold firmly to the hope that we have confessed, because we can trust God to do what he promised.

See it? You've got to hold on to your confession of faith. Hold it, don't let it go or slip away!

How To Hold On to Your Healing:

1. Take in the Word:

Romans 12:2

Col 3:16 Let the word have its home in your heart.

The more at home the Word feels in you - the more comfortable you will be with thinking it. Which is good because thinking it prompts you to speak it.

2. Think the Word

As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.

If you think you’re healed, you will be healed.

You need to have faith to get your healing and you need to have faith to KEEP your healing.

3. Speak the Word

James 4:7 says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you."

If you start to feel symptoms come back speak to the devil and tell them to go away. Quote God's word to him. Tell your symptoms to go away.

Resist Sickness Just Like You Resist Sin

It's God's will to heal you just as much as it is to forgive you of sin. It's God's will that you resist sickness, pain, and disease just like you resist sin.

If you start feeling pain, say: Pain I resist you. I refuse to be in pain. Pain must leave. If you start feeling sick, say: "Sickness I resist you. I refuse to be sick. Christ healed me of all sickness."

This is resisting the devil and what he is trying to put back on you through unbelief and using what you say. But if you hold fast to your confession of faith - you will keep your healing.

Any time the devil tries to tempt me with a little pain in my knee, I go into fighting mode. I resist his attacks by thinking and saying out loud: Knee you are healed. Pain, you have to go because Christ paid the price for my healing. My knee is strong and feels good. All that may sound silly to some who don’t believe. But guess what? It works.

I am happy to report since learning this - I don't suffer with knee problems anymore.

Now, the question you are all dying to ask… Will I compete in a triathlon? The answer... No. But not because of a knee problem. I just don't want to run!

So come on, if you want to keep your healing, hold onto your confession of faith. That’s how you hold on to healing!

Does God Scare You

Does God Scare You?

Do you feel like you are never good enough, can never do enough, or never have enough faith for God to love and accept you?

  • If you are feeling like you are constantly under the watchful eye of a God who wants to catch you doing something wrong...
  • Or that all he remembers are the things you've done wrong in the past...

I want you to take a deep breathe and relax.

You're about to get free.

Could it be that your own earthly father goofed up your thoughts of what a loving father should be? Let's think through this a moment. It will help you understand why God may scare you.

If you're dad or mom for that matter, didn't give you the eye of approval growing up, if your parents hurt you terribly, if they abandoned you, or ignored you, you may have issues with God.

They Kept Him But Didn't Love Him

A man named Zudu, from a dirt poor villiage, grew up this way. He was born out of wedlock - a mistake from birth. Because his parents didn't want him, they looked for a way to get rid of him when he was born. They couldn't find a family who would adopt Zudu, nor any family members who would take him, so they kept him, but didn't love him.

His father never bounced him on his knee, never taught him how to throw a ball or hunt or fish. His mother used him as a slave to gather wood, water, and do all the hard labor.

Zulu had sisters who were treated much better. They were wanted. They were smiled upon. They were clothed with the best his parents could offer. But Zulu? Zulu was second class. Actually - more like 3rd class or 4th class...or no class.

His parents hardly ever looked him in the eye. Hardly ever touched him with care. He began to believe it was his fault he was unloved and unapproved of. Who could blame him? This is how he knew his father and mother. He knew no security, no compassion, no acceptance.

Because Zulu had issues with his earthly father - it caused him to have issues with his heavenly father. How could his heavenly father love him differently than his earthly father? This caused him to fear God because he feared his own dad. He couldn't wrap his head around unconditional love because it was something he never had.

That was Zulu's issue. What's yours?

Do You Have a Hidden Issue With God?

If so, know this - God has no issues with you.

He loves you.

No matter what you've done. No matter what you haven't done. You are loved by your heavenly Father. Simply. Purely. Unconditionally.

John 3:16 NLT:

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

I pray right now that God will become more and more real to you. Though He is already extremely accepting of you - I pray that you will SEE Him as extremely accepting of you. I pray that you will experience the intimate love God wants to love you with. And when you feel it, it will heal you, restore you, and transform you because His love for you is limitless.

Enter The No-Fault Zone

Today, right now, you are covered by God's amazing grace.

  • Your Heavenly Father isn't looking to judge you for your mistakes or sins.
  • He has already judged your mistakes and blamed His own Son, Jesus for them.
  • This gives you the right to walk away - clean.
  • This also gives you the right to "feel O.K."

1 John 4:18 - 19 NLT:

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.

Now, how do you feel? Does God still scare you? I hope not. If you need a little more assurance, listen to this short podcast I recorded for you, "How to Convince Yourself that Jesus Loves You (iTunes.) (or use this direct link on the podcast site for Android or Computer listening.) "

3 Things I know About You

Hey! I know you! And here's WHAT I know - that I want you to know too...

1. God is working behind-the-scenes on your behalf. Whether you realize it or not, he is turning the situation around for your good.

How I know this:

Romans 8:28
That's why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

2. God is putting your enemies in their place.

How I know this:

Psalms 23:5
You prepare a feast for me
in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings.

3. God will not let you down. You don't have to be afraid of putting your hope in Him.

How I know this:

Romans 5:5-6 MSG
In alert expectancy such as this, we're never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary––we can't round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit! Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn't, and doesn't, wait for us to get ready.

Everything you hear is an opinion, not fact. Everything you see is a perspective, not the truth - UNLESS it's written in Bible.

I know these things about you because they are truth. And you can read about them for yourself in the Bible.

If your pastor is anything like mine he or she has projects cooking all of the time that introduce people to what Christ did to rescue them out of their mess. My pastors, Jeffrey & Amy Smith at City of Life Church, are some of the most creative people I've ever met, and their heart to bring hope to people is off the charts! I hope your pastor has heart and momentum like this too.

But your pastor(s) can't do it alone. My pastors have hundred and hundreds of volunteers working along side them helping get things done in the natural. But know what else they need? Hundred and hundreds of people praying for them and their projects.

When I can't be there physically there is still a way I can help them powerfully. When I can't join in and give face-to-face time, I can still put in some face-to-face time with God that will help my pastors get er done!

Your pastor is in a tough profession. I know from personal experience - pastoring is one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Especially if you're a lead pastor or a senior pastor. Ministry is one of the most time sucking and energy draining callings. And yes, it can be the most satisfying job - but it can also be tough on the family and tough on the pastor --- but YOU can make it easier.

Your pastor needs you. He or she can't do it alone.

You can help your pastor in ways beyond your "flesh and sweat - gifts and abilities". In Ephesians 6:19 (NLT),  Paul says,

And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike.

1. Prayer is the most valuable, precious, and powerful thing you can give your pastor. Yes, I say give because it takes your time, it takes your energy, and it takes your compassion to cover him (or her, or them) in the work he is doing.

2. Praying for your pastor is partnering with him. And like Paul, he'll be thankful for you.

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ. (Philippians 1:3)

3. Your pastor's success will also become your success. It's a win for both of you.

So what are you waiting for? Get praying for you pastor and his projects and you'll be multiplying his or her efforts! Get started today. Or even now!

Here's a prayer you can pray for your pastor:

Father, my senior pastor(s) has a huge responsibility before him. I cannot imagine the load they carry each week preparing for sermons and teachings. Leading, advising, planning, managing, counseling. Whew! That's a lot. Please fuel them with your energy and strength. I ask that the Spirit of the Lord rest on them - the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. I pray that they will delight in obeying the Lord. May the pattern of teaching they use be shaped by the faith and the love of Christ. Give them the right words so they can boldly explain the gift of salvation to all walks of life. Give them hope as they instill hope in me and others. In Jesus Name.

Say This:

The life-giving Spirit of God will hover over my senior pastor(s). The Spirit that brings wisdom and understanding, the Spirit that gives direction and builds strength, the Spirit that instills knowledge and Fear-of-God is all over them. The fear-of-God will be their joy and delight. My pastor's words will bring everyone to attention. A mere breath from his/her lips will topple the wicked. Each morning he'll/she'll get on it and build righteousness and faithfulness in our church and community.

Now, Guess what? You just did something to make your pastor(s) better! You just did something to enhance his ministry and make it stronger. You just did something to refresh him and give him the edge. You just did something in the spirit that's going to manifest itself in the natural. Look out! You just made your pastor better!

If you enjoyed this, pass it on. And here's something else, email your pastor(s) and let him or her know you're praying for what he or she is working on!

Have You Ever Felt Like God Was a Grinch?

Ever felt like God was kind of shall we say…stingy? Grinch-like? Tight-fisted? Now, before you get yourself in a tizzy thinking I've gone sideways on God, you must read on. I'm here trying to help you...even if you've never admitted it out loud…we all (that's me too) at one time or another have thought God was holding back on us, right?

  • When your kid got sick - even though you asked God to heal.
  • When the marriage ended - even though you asked God to restore.
  • When the joy was sucked out of your life - even though you asked God to change things.

When…you fill in the blank.

So, here we are at Christmas time and we've all had thoughts in the past that God's stingy with us. So here's a smack upside the head when we need to see it differently. (Warning: you may have an outburst of joy and tears after watching!)

Watch this video and as you do, keep this scripture in mind:

Bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him! Matthew 7:11 GNB

Video clip : Click here to watch now.

So, in light of this…regardless of whether or not you've been naughty or nice…God's still got you on his list. AND, he's more than willing to give you good things. Just believe.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 NLT

Your Faith is Mixed if Your Doing This

Guy with PencilDo you have mixed faith?

Well, How do your prayers sound?

If your sending God mixed messages, it might look like this...

One anti-drug organization distributed some free pencils to schoolchildren. Sadly, it had the opposite effect than they intended.

The group passed out pencils with the printed message: "WAY TO COOL TO DO DRUGS."

Great message, right?

Yep. Until the pencil got sharpened. As the kiddos twiddled down their pencil points the message became: "COOL TO DO DRUGS."

Yeah, that's cool. And a little more pencil use plus a little more sharpening eventually made the message: "DO DRUGS."

Great. Same pencil. Mixed message. Time and use made the message evolve into something other than intended.

Does that ever happen to your faith? Or your prayers?

You start out with a faith filled prayer that covers all the bases. Then time starts to ware on that prayer. No answer twiddles away at your faith and you're left with less and less of it.

What does this sound like?

Though you prayed a powerful faith filled prayer, comments slip out of your mouth that are opposite of what you prayed for.

God, help us financially to meet our needs. But then weeks later, you're looking over your bills and you utter: "We'll never get out of debt!" If God is for us, why isn't he helping us?

Sure, you're frustrated, that's understandable. But you're sending a mixed faith signal up to the heavens.

Doesn't sound like you really believe God's gonna get you out of this mess, do you?

Or how about this: you're looking to passionately infuse your home with the love of Christ. You pray, "God, fill this place with your presence, let it overflow, let it ooze out of us on a daily basis."

Yeah, that's a nice mushy prayer. It'll work too, until you get sick and tired of your kids acting like hooligans, your spouse forgets to pick up the dry cleaning, and your car won't start because your teenager left the lights on all night.

Oh, and lets not forget the dog pooping all over the floor and your cat decides to spray all over the living room furniture.

Your emotions take over, you lose your faith-filled frame of mind, and you yell in desperation:  "My life sucks!" Oops. Too strong for you? Well, I'm sure you think it even if you don't say it.

Get real. Keep in mind who your God is. He's able to turn every situation upside down and get you out of your mess.

Do you realize who you're dealing with here? The Jesus I hope you serve is the same one who kicked the devil's booty out of heaven. Yes, he's the alpha and omega and in case you don't get what that means… just know he's got everything covered. Everything is under control.

You, my dear, don't need to sweat it. He's standing by your side even when you think you're all alone. And he's available if you'll just reach out with faith…

  • Unmixed faith.
  • Faith that won't dwindle.
  • Faith that stays sharp.
  • Faith that is faithful.

That's faith that will see you through, as long as you don't mix it up!

The Bionic Prayer that Packs Punch

Remember Steve Austin, the Bionic Man? Actually, he was called the Six Million Dollar Man. And his gal...she WAS the Bionic Woman. Those two super heroes were my all-time favorite's as a kid. Each on their own could fight off a dozen men bigger than they were with just their pinky's.

Wouldn’t it be cool to have the power of bionics at your disposal to whip the devil’s behind?

Guess what? You do!

Ok, it’s not called bionics, but if you buy into what the Bible says about the power you have at your disposal, (See Ephesians 1) you’ve got something even greater than a bionic arm.

Let’s call it a bionic prayer. Cause it’ll pack punch.

If you need a little boost getting your bionics on in the prayer arena, here’s a little help…

Picture This:

Even in prayer, your words produce power. You've learned that praying negatively and focusing on your problems only energizes and strengthens them. Instead, you pray God's solution from the Word and it releases life.

Scripture This:

Proverbs 18:21  Life and death are in the power of the tongue.

Pray This:

Oh God, how powerful your Word is! Help me to use your Word to slice through the problems in my life when I pray. Give me wisdom to take your Word and lay a foundation to all of my prayers. I will declare your promises and think about your truths. As I do, I will see things materialize that will bring you glory.

Say This:

When something unfortunate happens, or when I'm not feeling well, I will not gripe, complain, or toss negative words around. I will release the power of God's Word into my life and my circumstances. I will see things change and take the shape that I speak about.

The Answer Man Is Near You

You've broken it again. But God says, "We can fix this. Let me teach you. Let me show you how to handle your mistakes, your money problems, cranky loved-ones, and navigate long days. Let me teach you why people fight, why death comes, and why forgiveness is imperative." You step back, pick your head up, and grin, because he has all the answers.

Scripture This:

Philippians 4:19 NCV:

My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Psalm 23:1 NCV:

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NCV:

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Pray This:

God, there's so much I want to know. So many questions running through my mind. Can you give me answers? Help me fix my mess. You said you would supply all of my need according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. I'm counting on that. I'm also holding onto the idea that you are my shepherd, so I will not lack. Thank you for giving me the answers that I need exactly when I need them.

Say This:

I'm so glad that when I've got a mess on my hands, God is able to make all things new again. I look to God, as my Answer Man. He'll help me piece it all together and figure things out.

Been Mistreated? …How to Bless the Slime!

No doubt someone has messed with your stuff this week. Mistreated you, lied to you, stolen from you, hurt you. If not today, then maybe a couple days ago. Come on now, you know it's still under your skin. Want to figure out a way to get it out of your system? Here's a simple prayer to bless the slime in your life! (It will help you just as much as it blesses them!)

Picture This:

It's easy to bless the people who speak well of you. But those who drag you into the mud? Not so easy. Thankfully, you are growing in this area, and you are learning to bless and even pray for those who curse you.

Scripture This:

Romans 12:14 NLT

Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.

Pray This:

God, I want to forgive the slime who speak lies and nonsense about me. I can't even begin to understand why they say those things, but others are beginning to believe what was said about me. I want this stopped! Help me to rise above this. Stop those who are lying about me. And Lord...I ask you to bless them, change them, rescue them. Use this hurtful situation to bring about needed changes in me. And them. Amen.

Say This:

I choose today to speak words of kindness and blessing over those who have tried to hurt me. My words are powerful, so I will say things that build others up rather than tear them down. I am giving the enemy notice--the strategies he is using against me are failing. I am rising up through Christ.

Here’s a Pep-Talk From God if You’re Feeling Down

Down? Discouraged? Not sure which way to go or what to do next? Here's a little something that will lift your spirits. Let's call it a pep talk from God. Read this little post with a prayer and let him coach you toward victory. It's probably just what you need today to get you out of your funk.

Picture This:

You were feeling like a train wreck. Nothing seemed to be working for you. Tears were building up behind your eyes and the dam of emotion was just about to burst. You didn’t think you were going to make it, but then God got a hold of you and changed your mind!  A little talk did the trick. He gave you a new outlook and showed you how to see behind the clouds. He whispered some things that you’ve been eager to hear. Now you’re good, the little pep talk he gave you will help you carry on.

Scripture This:

Romans 15:4 NLT

Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled.

Lamentations 3:24-26 MSG

God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out,

his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.

They’re created new every morning.

How great your faithfulness!

I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over).

He’s all I’ve got left.

Pray This:

God, remind me when I get down and can’t see my way up, to take a few minutes to consult with you. I know just a moment in your presence can change everything. My circumstances. My perspective. And certainly my outcome. I invite you to keep me on track. I need you to keep me focused. Coach me Lord, to the finish line.

Say This:

I just received a pep talk from God. When I read his word, he gives me the boost I need to carry on. Like a personal coach, he’s right there, pushing me toward victory. He calms me when I’m upset and he helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m going to make it, he says so, and I believe every word.

What Gives You The Right to Pray?

You know that feeling when you need to pray for something but there's this nagging feeling in the back of your mind that you don't deserve to ask? Or maybe God's too busy with people who are really righteous to listen to you? Or, even if you do get a prayer off your lips, Satan will knock it out of the air before it reaches God anyway? What gives you the right to pray? Let me show you so you can get what you need...

God gave you the right to pray when he gave you dominion over the earth. (See Genesis.) In other words, you're boss! Yeah, you... the boss!

Problem though, is that our relationship with God was broken through the measly act of a selfish woman and her selfish man eating off a tree that were not supposed to touch. That put distance between them and God. When that happened, they:

  • felt cut off from God
  • felt God was disappointed with them
  • didn't know if God would want them back
  • didn't know if God would still meet their needs
  • felt they didn't deserve the good things God could give them

Does this sound familiar? Have any of these thoughts popped into your mind when you think about praying and relating to God?

If so, take a deep breath. You feel this way simply because you're a descendent of the man and woman who made the first blunder - Adam and Eve. And yes, some of your own screw ups have contributed to these feelings too.

But there's a solution. And it's one that will give you hope and put you back in the driver's seat so you have the right to pray.

Only through Christ are you put back in right relationship with God, your sins forgiven and excused, giving you the right to pray with authority.

So what gives you the right to pray?

2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

Romans 8:3b NLT

He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

Ephesians 3:12 NLT

Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.

Now, looking at the scriptures above you can see that:

  • Jesus Christ, a guy totally without sin, paid for your sin.
  • Jesus Christ forgave you, your move is to just believe and accept.
  • Jesus Christ making you clean, gives you the right to pray.

Not only do you have the right to pray, but also the confidence to pray with boldness, authority, and knowing, the boss!

I'll share with you in the next post how you can use that authority to let the devil know - that you know - you're boss. Then, he'll leave you alone, and you can have what's been yours all along. Yes, the things you've asked for, but haven't received yet. Stay tuned and I'll talk with you later!

Would God Let You Die of Starvation Like He Does Others?

imagesHave you ever read a headline that said: Millions of Birds Dying of Starvation?

Nope… And you never will.

How can I be so sure?

Because God promises he would take care of them.

Matt 6:26 NLT:

Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?

Just think about this…

If God cares so much for birds…birds. I'm talking birds. Little feathery things that just fly around and make noise...don't you think he's also looking out for you?

But people die of starvation all over the world, right?

But those people are not putting their trust in God.

Show me a person who has rock solid faith in God yet they are starving to death. Bet you can't find one. I've never heard of anyone having God at the center of his or her life starve to death. Not one.

Psalm 37:25:

Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.

Matt 6:33 NLT:

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

It's impossible for someone who makes the kingdom of God first priority to starve or not have his or her basic needs met.

Have confidence in your God.

Put him first.

Do this, and you will always have your needs met.

Here’s the no-fail formula: God 1st = Needs Met.

You're more important than the birds.

Believe it.

Can You Handle 5 Minutes of Prayer a Day? Me Either!

images-3Can You Handle 5 Minutes of Prayer a Day?

I hope not! Why? Well, lets think of it this way…if I only prayed 5 minutes a day, I wouldn't be able to even scratch the surface of all my needs and the needs of other people I want to pray for.

And 5 minutes a day with the most important being in my life?

I need more time with God! There's no way I can tell him everything that's on my heart in just 5 minutes.

  • No way I can let him speak to me and tell me what I need to know for my day in 5 minutes.
  • No way I can unload all of my cares on him in 5 min.
  • No way I can thank him for everything I'm grateful for in 5 minutes.
  • No way I can kick back and enjoy his presence in just 5 minutes.

I need more time with Him!

The Simple Solution:

Pray continually throughout the day. It's really not as hard as you might think. Just make it an ongoing conversation.

1 Thes 5:16-18 MSG

…pray all the time; thank God no matter what happens. This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.

Just include God in everything you’re doing. Like he's your constant companion, always by your side. Glued to you and attached to your hip. Where you go, he goes. What you're involved in, he's involved in.

Makes sense then, that you'd talk to him about the things you are doing each day and night right?

So, can you handle 5 minutes of prayer a day? Yes…and more!!!

Learn How to Pray By Trial & Error

When I was in high school, I worked at a little Italian pizza place. We served all kinds of Italian dishes, subs, and the best garlic bread this side of Italy. But we specialized in pizza. Real hand tossed pizza. Out of fresh dough made daily. Ahh, I can smell it now. My mouth is watering!

The first couple of weeks I worked there, I waited tables. But it was my goal to get back into that kitchen and make the pizza.

Sure enough, after a few weeks, I was brought alongside the head pizza creator, the owner himself. He showed me how to stretch the dough, how to toss it into the air in a perfect spiral so it would land on my knuckles and then gently pull it out, shaping it with each toss.

It looked fun. It looked easy. Till I tried it. As the old saying goes, "It wasn't as easy as it looked." But I kept at it. Kept tossing, kept practicing. Soon, I had it down and was able to make over a dozen hand tossed pizzas to order in a matter of minutes. And they were lip-smacking good!

As we know, on the job training is the best training, so why not use that kind of training for prayer? If you want to pray effectively, Learn How to Pray By Doing It.

Get at it like I got at the pizza making. Give it a whirl and you'll develop your skills as a pray-er! You can listen to others pray and you can read prayers others have penned, but until you dive in and pray all by yourself, you're not going to really "get it."

Since your time is limited, here's a few ideas for on the job training in the prayer arena:

  • Pray in your car.
  • Pray while you're taking a walk.
  • Pray as you're cleaning your house.
  • Pray as you're on the job (under your breath).
  • Pray with your spouse.
  • Pray with your kids.
  • Pray with your friends.
  • Pray over your problems
  • Pray for the attitudes you are struggling with.
  • Pray for situations where you need God to turn things around.
  • Pray for others who have situations you are aware of that need God's touch.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Just a few weeks ago, my friend Kathy and I were walking in the mall weaving in and out amongst all the busy people shopping. I mentioned I had a toothache that was really bugging me. She simply laid her hand on my back and prayed for me as we were walking: "Jesus, thank you for your healing and removing Linda's toothache." That was it. Simple prayer, simple faith.

And know what? My toothache went away.

So want to learn how to pray? Do it by trial and error.

On the job training is the best way to learn how to pray. Pray anywhere you are. Don't get weird about it. Don't do it in King James Language (Unless that's how you talk to everyone else, though I sincerely doubt it.) Don't elevate your voice so everyone within a mile radius can hear you. Just pray. God can hear your softly spoken prayers even above the lawnmower next door.

The more you pray, the better you will get at it. Give prayer a whirl! You'll be seeing answers in no time! The best way to learn how to pray is to simply do it.

How to Pray for a Miracle: The Craziest Prayer I Ever Prayed, “The Miracle of Dove Soap”

One of the craziest prayers I ever prayed was that God would never let my soap bottle run dry. Yeah, it's kind of reminiscent of the story in the Bible about the poor widow who was told to bake cakes for the prophet, Elisha. That was a crazy story too. She was challenged to make food without the things she needed to make food. That could be a problem – but, not with God!

The Craziest Prayer I Ever Prayed

I was reading this story in my Bible and thought, well, if God can miraculously make the widow’s oil and flour containers replenish every time she put it back in her closet, he can do the same for me. So I got bold. I got a little crazy. I stepped out and asked God to do something totally out there. I prayed for soap! Hey, my faith was stirred by what I had just read so why not? See if this stirs you…

Struggling to Pay Bills

The year was 1991. My husband and I had been married less than a year. Like most newly married couples, we struggled each week to pay the bills and keep all of our supplies stocked.

We lived in a cute little apartment that had all new appliances because we were the first to live there. We had a dishwasher, but in thinking about how we could cut corners and save money, we choose to hand-wash our dishes rather than run the dishwasher. But we still had to buy soap, right? Nope!

We had a little bottle of Dove soap, one of those trial size containers up on our counter top. And we had a bigger bottle of Dove soap that we kept under the kitchen counter below the sink. That's the one we used to refill the little one when it would run out. So we've got two Dove soap bottles. One little one on the kitchen sink, one big one under the kitchen sink. Follow me here.

Dove Soap That Never Ran Out

As I was washing the dishes that day, I was talking to God and asking him to meet all of our needs. I had just read that far out story about the widow whose flour and oil had never run dry. And then a crazy kind of faith came over me. I said,

“God, you know we are struggling to make ends meet. We are faithful to you to tithe and give offerings. So I'm going to ask you to do something for me - will you please never allow this Dove soap bottle down here to run dry?”

I was talking about the big soap bottle under the sink. I picked it up and I said,

“Lord, the next time I take this out and refill the little bottle and put it back, just replenish it. Please don't ever let it run dry. Thank you, Amen.”

That's it. Simple prayer prayed with simple faith.

Know what? The next time I went to refill that little soap bottle with the big one, I took note of how much was in the big bottle. Then the next time I went to refill the little one, I opened up that cabinet below, grabbed that big bottle expecting to see enough soap in there to fill the little one. I got it.

Let me tell you, I don't know how it happened. I don't get how God did it, all I know is that every single time I went to refill that little bottle with the bigger bottle there was always enough. It never ran dry.

My Soap Has NEVER Run Dry

To this day, I still have those two bottles of Dove soap. And know what? They still have soap in them. That was 21 years ago. Now, after all those years I keep them in a box in the garage. And though they are yellowish from age, and the labels are brittle and old, and the Kmart price tag is falling off, they are still full of soap! I refilled that little bottle over and over and over again through the years with the big bottle of soap. And it has never run dry.

Does prayer work?

Yes! Does God still do miraculous things in response to crazy faith-filled prayers? Yes, he does. I have a Dove soap bottle to prove it.

Has God answered ALL of my prayers? No….But he does answer prayer! So with that in mind, PRAY! What have you got to lose?

I’d love to hear your story – what crazy, faith-filled prayers has God answered for you? Comment on this post so we can all read about it. You’ll be building someone’s faith! And hey, while you’re at it, share this post, your friends will thank you!

Praying & Keeping Calm During Tornadoes & Disasters

Keep calm, are you kidding? Tornadoes, bombings, drive-by shootings. Deadly disease, sickness, lay-offs, kids running away from home. How do you keep calm with potentially devastating events  on your horizon? Stick with me, and I'll show you how you can keep calm by praying when dark things are lurking in the distance.

You've probably seen the "Keep Calm and Carry On" images floating all over the internet. The motto too has become a popular response in the midst of difficult events. It's a great slogan, that's why it's so catchy. But do you know where it came from?

A Glimpse Into the History of "Keep Calm & Carry On"

When the Second World War was in full swing, the British Government commissioned the Ministry of Information to take care of publicity and propaganda. Their job was to design a number of morale boosting posters that would be displayed across the British Isles during the testing times that lay ahead.

The posters were put in strategic places, to be seen by those facing the threat of war. They were placed in the public transport areas, shop windows, notice boards and hoardings across Britain. The most comforting of these posters read, "Keep Calm and Carry On". It was straightforward, to the point, and comforting to all who needed the reminder.

It's amazing that decades later people still find this message so reassuring as we face our modern dilemmas. I have put a little spin on this saying for you, my readers, that will bring you even more comfort in the tough times that may lay ahead for you.

Keep Calm & Pray!

Keep Calm & Pray Pic

During World War 2, German planes bombed London. Houses were leveled. But there was a woman who remained calm amidst the rubble. She read Psalm 121:4 which says, "Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep," she told the Lord, "Lord, since You don't sleep, then there is not point in both of us keeping awake. I will sleep while You keep watch." And she did! While she slept, the Lord protected her and her house.

What Might You be Afraid of?

  • Things that lurk in the night?
  • Things that fly at you like arrows in the day?
  • Disease that prowls through the darkness?
  • Disaster that erupts at high noon?

God protects you from:

  • tornadoes
  • earthquakes
  • drive-by shootings
  • bombs
  • viruses
  • deadly disease
  • a tsunami
  • rape
  • kidnap
  • murder
  • sinkholes
  • bankruptcy

No matter what is on your trouble-list, take comfort in Psalm 91: 5-12 MSG:

Fear nothing-- not wild wolves in the night, not flying arrows in the day, not disease that prowls through the darkness, not disaster that erupts at high noon. Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you. You'll stand untouched, watch it all from a distance, watch the wicked turn into corpses. Yes, because God's your refuge, the High God your very own home, evil can't get close to you, harm can't get through the door. He ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go. If you stumble, they'll catch you; their job is to keep you from falling.

You don't have to fear, God is watching over you 24/7. He never takes a nap or even a break. All so you can stay calm and carry on because you stayed calm, and prayed!

A Prayer Hack That Will Help You Love Your Messy Self

UnknowYou're a mess you say? No problem. But that makes you not love yourself so much. Here's a prayer hack that will help you love your messy self!

Picture This:

You are no longer convinced God hates you. Though you can't stand yourself sometimes, he's all grins when he sees you. You don't like the things you say and do. He doesn't either, but he still loves you. Even when your sin could be nauseating, he doesn't turn away. He's there loving you back to right living. You're loved. No ifs. No ands. No buts. God loves you regardless.

Scripture This:

1 John 3:29 NCV

If our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

1 John 5:13 NLT

I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

Colossians 1:13-14 NLT

For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.

1 John 4:18 NLT

Perfect love expels all fear.

Pray This:

God, when I'm tempted to doubt your grace, wake me up. You love me too much to leave me in doubt. You never keep a list of sins consulting it often. In fact, on your list, there's nothing listed. How did that happen? Oh, yes, your mercy. Your love. Your Son. He covered it and I'm eternally forgiven and eternally thankful.

Say This:

I have been purchased. I have been given freedom and forgiven. I will not condemn myself anymore. The past is in the rearview mirror and I refuse to look back. God has made my heart clean and I am extravagantly loved. I will remind myself today that God loves me regardless of what I've done or who I am. I'm loved.

Share this with your friends and family so they can learn to love their messy selves too. They'll thank you!

A Picture of God’s Protection & How to Pray For It

A Picture of God's Protection & How to Pray For It

images-1I heard a story about a farmer who was surveying the damage a fire had caused to his farm. He walked all around the farm looking for anything he could salvage. It seemed hopeless as everything was burnt to a crisp. When he came across his chicken coop, he looked down to see the charred carcass of a mother hen. He flipped the carcass over with the tip of his boot, and to his amazement, little live chicks ran out from under it! The mother had died protecting her chicks from the fire.

This mama chicken with big wings and the will to protect reminds me of the way God takes care of us, his chicks! You may have never thought of yourself as a lil chick, but that's how the Bible describes us.

Psalms 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers.

He will shelter you with his wings.

His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

I love that fact that if we are believers in God, we are under his wings of protection. That's something we can take comfort in when life seems turbulent. When the bill collectors are calling, when the doctor calls with a bad report, you can call on the name of The Lord, and he will spread out his wings for you to duck under.

What have you been ducking under lately?

Have you used any substitutes for protection?

  • Maybe you've found yourself in your lover's arms thinking he or she can replace God's. They can't.
  • Maybe you've found yourself in your bottle of Jack Daniels, thinking it can wash away your pain. It can't.
  • Maybe you've found yourself working your way to a bloody pulp hoping to cover your situation. You can't.

Only the blood of Jesus offers access into God's Protection System. So if you want protection, you're covered, but you have to duck under and take cover.

If you'd rather not, and you take cover on your own - well, you're really just out there in the open. Vulnerable and without a chance. Sooner or later, circumstances will catch up with you and they will crush you. Why not seek safety under the shadow of His wings? When you do, you have this promise of protection…

2 Corinthians 4:8 & 9 NLT:

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.

Like that mother hen, Jesus is the bigger, stronger being that died protecting you from the fire. And because of his death, you don't have to experience the fire of hell or the fire of earthly trauma. All you have to do is believe in what he did for you and you'll be protected.

His feathers are big enough, strong enough, and his wings wide enough to cover you no matter what comes your way.

Here's a Prayer Booster from Prayer Rock-It to help you pray for God's protection...

Picture This:

You have nothing to fear. You feel safe. Though you have no bodyguard in the natural, you have angels all around you that can't be seen. You feel as though nothing can penetrate the barriers of protection God has surrounded you with. You are confident in God's care and because of that - you have not one concern for your life. All is well. You're relaxed.

Scripture This:

Proverbs 14:26 AMP

In the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children shall always have a place of refuge.

Psalm 32:7 NLT:

For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble.

Job 11:18-19 NLT:

Having hope will give you courage.

You will be protected and will rest in safety.

You will lie down unafraid,

and many will look to you for help.

Pray This:

God, you are my great protector. Thank you for keeping me safe and secure. Since I fear you, I have nothing else to fear. You are my hiding place, protect me from trouble. Give me courage as I hope in you. Let me lie down unafraid and sleep in peace. Tonight I want to rest in safety. I look to you for help. Make me confident in you.

Say This:

I am full of hope. I'll relax. I'll be confident again. I look around, sit back, and take it easy. I am without a care in the world.  The Fear-of-God builds up confidence in me, and makes the world safe for my family and me. I am fully protected and safe in God's care.

Are You’re Sad, Depressed, Frustrated When Ending Your Prayer Time? This Will Help

One of the benefits of being a believer is getting to pour your heart out to God, right? True. Feels good to vent, and share your frustrations. And since God's ears are always open to your prayers, you've got an audience 24/7. That's more time than your spouse or friends will give you. Problem is, when we spend so much of our prayer time, pouring our sorrows into God's loving arms, it can leave us sad instead of happy.

new good spirits

Have you ever ended your prayer time feeling worse than when you started? Let me show you what you can do to change that. You can still unload on God; his shoulders are broad enough for that. But it's how you end your prayer time that will determine if you're in a good mood or a bad one after your done praying.

There is a danger in pouring our sorrows out to God if we don't also pour out something happy. You know people, who talk non-stop about the trouble and pain in their life, don't ya? And those folks are not very happy are they? Nope. Because when a person is absorbed and only focused on their difficulties, it actually puts them in a bad mood.

If you want to have a pity party in front of God, go for it. He's all ears. But if that's how you end it, you're going to be in a bad mood. I speak from experience! What's the key? Balance. A little bit of this and a little bit of that.

Achieving Peace & Happiness After Sad Prayers

We can get a lot of our prayer cues from David in the Bible. He was a master "pray-er." He prayed some heavy-duty prayers. They weren’t all fun and games. There were people after him and many times he found himself depressed, alone, and hopeless. Take a peak inside his pain:

Psalm 6 1-7 MSG:

Please, GOD, no more yelling, no more trips to the woodshed.

Treat me nice for a change;

I'm so starved for affection.

Can't you see I'm black and blue,

beat up badly in bones and soul?

GOD, how long will it take

for you to let up?

Break in, GOD, and break up this fight;

if you love me at all, get me out of here.

I'm no good to you dead, am I?...

I'm tired of all this-- so tired. My bed

has been floating forty days and nights

On the flood of my tears.

My mattress is soaked, soggy with tears.

The sockets of my eyes are black holes;

nearly blind, I squint and grope.

But David knew how to get back on track. Notice how he ends his prayer time in this Psalm...

Psalms 18:46-50 MSG:

Live, GOD! Blessings from my Rock,

my free and freeing God, towering!

This God set things right for me

and shut up the people who talked back.

He rescued me from enemy anger,

he pulled me from the grip of upstarts,

He saved me from the bullies.

That's why I'm thanking you, GOD,

all over the world.

That's why I'm singing songs

that rhyme your name.

David ended his prayer with thanksgiving. That right there will set your world back in the upright position. He writes in Psalm 103:2, Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.

Recording God's Stats

What was David doing here? He was recording the goodness of God. You can too. Remember the winning plays and write them down.

Look how David does it again…

Psalms 30:12 MSG:

I'm about to burst with song;

I can't keep quiet about you.

GOD, my God,

I can't thank you enough.

Psalms 105:1-5 MSG:

Thank GOD! Pray to him by name!

Tell everyone you meet what he has done!

Sing him songs, belt out hymns,

translate his wonders into music!

Honor his holy name with Hallelujahs,

you who seek GOD. Live a happy life!

Keep your eyes open for GOD, watch for his works;

be alert for signs of his presence.

Remember the world of wonders he has made,

his miracles, and the verdicts he's rendered--

Take your cues from David, finish up that prayer time of yours by talking about how amazing God is. When you do, it not only changes your mood, but there are a few other advantages too.

Benefits to Ending Your Prayer Time with Thanks:

1. You will build your faith. (You'll feel God put you back together.)

2. You will build your confidence. (Your prayers will be more powerful because your confidence level in God rises.)

3. God sticks around (He is enthroned on the praises of his people.)

4. You will be happier and in a better mood. Joy restored. Sweet deal!

Psalms 18:21-23 MSG:

Now I'm alert to GOD's ways;

I don't take God for granted.

Every day I review the ways he works;

I try not to miss a trick.

I feel put back together,

and I'm watching my step.

Do you thank God for all the great things he does for you on a regular basis?

Even when you're up against a wall and there's no way out, instead of leaving God with a troubled mind, rehearse what God has brought you through in the past. Start naming them one by one.

  • Remember how God rescued you 6 years ago…. or 20 or 4?
  • Remember how God pulled you through that dark season of your life when…
  • Remember how God healed your body when the doctors said you had…
  • Remember how God provided for you when you lacked…
  • Remember how God restored your relationship with…
  • Remember how God saved you and made you a new person in...
  • Remember the miracles he performed for you!

Now, tell him how thankful you are for each of those things you just brought back to your mind. Let the memories morph into praise.

Make a Record Book for God

When God sets a new record for himself and comes through for you in a powerful way - write it down! Record the stats. Every detail. You will look back on the impossibility of your situations and say, "Whew! Look what God has done!" This is what David did in the Psalms; he recorded the events where God saved his behind. He logged God's goodness.

Go ahead, grab a notebook, nothing fancy, and start a Log Book for God. Fill it up with occurrences of answered prayer. This will build your confidence in God, and make your prayers more powerful because you'll be stirring your faith.

Before you move on from this blog post, take a few moments to think of everything you can be thankful for. What has God done for you? Rehearse it in your mind. Replay it. See yourself back at a desperate spot and how it felt when God moved and pulled you through.

Record, log, and rehearse your miracle moments - when you do, I guarantee you won't end your prayer time sad, depressed, or frustrated. A peace will settle on you like a sweet perfume. You'll have a glimmer in your eye, and hope in your gut. It will be put there by your praise and thanksgiving as you remember what God has done for you.

Ready? Get happy…end your prayer time with praise instead of sadness & frustration!

Are These Things Keeping You From Praying & Reading Your Bible?

Are These Things Keeping You From Praying & Reading Your Bible?
The next time you think you don't have time for prayer, think again. Could it be that you have the time stashed away but you don't know where to find it? Let's investigate and I'll show you how you can grab the time you want for prayer and Bible reading without it becoming a difficult task.

Little Things Can Keep You From the Big Things

Like tons of other believers, you probably have time to fill your day with small things which are not vital to your spiritual health. If your time is filled with the little things, you will end up ignoring the big things that determine your health and success as a Christian believer.

How to Find Time to Pray & Read Your Bible

Here's some good news: the key to having more time to nourish your soul and bring growth to your Spiritual being is doable. Just take a little time from the little things and direct that time toward the big things - prayer and reading your Bible. If you do, you'll be growing leaps and bounds as a Christian, you'll be more at peace, and you will have more wins in life.

What's on your small list?

What are the small things you can stop doing or spend less time doing, so you can devote more time to the big thing you really want to focus on?

Could any of these be on your list:

-  Surfing the net?
-  Twitter?
-  Facebook?
-  IM’ing?
-  Instagram?
-  Groupon?
-  Texting?
-  Google+?
-  StumbleUpon?
-  LinkedIn?
-  Angry Birds?
-  Pinterest?
-  Solitaire?
-  Instantaneous email replies?

-  TV?

Become a Little Snatcher!

You can find the time to pray and read your Bible, just snatch it away from the little things list and you'll have more time than you imagined! Becoming a little snatcher will help you focus.
What are you going to snatch off your "little things list" this week, so you have the time you need to spend with God?

Here's a Prayer Booster:
God, I really do want to spend time with you because I know you'll bring peace to my crazy world. I also want to be nourished in my spirit by reading your Word. Help me to zero in on some items on my "little things list" so I have time to pray, read my Bible, and just be with you. Show me what things I can stop or do less of to give you more time. I know time with you is always well spent. I also know that being with you will refuel me and give me what I need to face my day. Help me keep my prayer and Bible reading time front and center. Thank you, In Jesus Name.

How to Pray for Depression to Go Away

Are you feeling down? It's ok. Well, not really because you want to feel better, right? I know. I've been there too. I've worked my way into some pretty dark tunnels in the past. Thankfully I found a way out. God's about to help you out of your dark tunnel. Let me show you how to pray depression away so you can get some relief. The light is about to turn on!

Picture This:

You are happy and free from the dark tunnel of depression. Hovering clouds have disappeared. The difficult things that try to get you down do not succeed because you have your eyes focused on God and his love toward you. When you feel yourself slipping into a downward spiral, you know what to do. You pull out a list of God's goodness and he pulls you through. The Son is shining again!

Scripture This:

Psalms 40:16 NLT:

But may all who search for you

be filled with joy and gladness in you.

May those who love your salvation

repeatedly shout, “The Lord is great!”

Psalms 42:11 NLT:

Why am I discouraged?

Why is my heart so sad?

I will put my hope in God!

I will praise him again—

my Savior and my God!

Pray This:

God, when I'm down and feeling low, I am determined to turn it around. Help me to pull off a good mood instead of a downward one. As I search for you, fill me with joy and gladness in you. Enable me to stay focused on your salvation because that's really the most important thing I have. With that in mind, I will no longer be discouraged. I will put my hope in Jesus because he saves me! Thank you that there is light at the end of the tunnel because there is light in you!

Say This:

If I'm down in the dumps and crying the blues, I will fix my eyes on God— I'll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He's my God and he has given me a huge reason to rejoice. Salvation is enough to make me happy. Thinking of God's goodness is keeping me going. I am climbing out of depression and I'm walking in joy today. (Based on the Message version of Psalm 42:11.)

This isn't an end all be all solution. You may be at the place where you need to seek medical help to deal with your depression. But I have found that this prayer and declaration can help put an end to depression. So use it. Repeat it often. But get more help if you need it. It's ok!

Here’s What Happens When You Pray Evil Out of Your Community

What happens when you pray evil out of your community?

Demolition crews arrive on the scene.

Oh true, it may not happen right away. But keep praying anyway and you will see evil move away.

Here's how it went down in my neighborhood:

Just a few miles from where my family and I live was a building that failed to succeed as a thriving business. Why did it fail to succeed? Because my two teenagers and I prayed for it's destruction.

The day the sign went up I drove by and gasped! "Club Lust" is what it read. You're kidding? Really? Just a few miles away from my house? I don't think so. I decided right there I'm not having it. Not going to have a "Club Lust" in my neighborhood. So I spoke up.

Every day I drove by that stinking filthy thing - I prayed that it would go away. Let me clarify. I didn't just ask to God remove it, I told it to go away. I spoke up. I demanded that it be shut down and torn down.

I told my two teenagers our plan. "Whenever we drive by it, we'll speak to it and tell it to go away. We will not have a Club Lust in our neighborhood. It must leave." Ever since then we've been telling that place to be removed.

Demolitions Start in the Spirit Realm

Our little demolition prayer started a couple years ago. It didn't happen right away. But today as I drove by that place my heart did a happy dance! I saw the demolition crew on the ground and bulldozers knocking the building over. It's being removed at this very moment.

As I am typing away on this keyboard, a bulldozer is a few miles away physically removing what I had already removed in the spirit realm. And before you get all bent out of shape thinking I'm cuckoo, just remember that Jesus told us how to handle things like this in Mark 11:23:

If you have faith in God and don't doubt, you can tell this mountain to get up and jump into the sea, and it will. Everything you ask for in prayer will be yours, if you only have faith. (CEV)

He said speak to your mountain and tell it to move. He didn't say ask that it be moved. He said, "tell it to move". That's what I told Club Lust to do. I told it to move out of my neighborhood. And this is what you can do with the things in your life that need to go. Tell them to move.

Stop Asking & Start Commanding

Too often we keep asking when we should be commanding. If Jesus said you have authority to tell something to move then get gutsy and speak up. Some of you have no problem telling others where to go... so speak up and tell your problems where to go!

The Bar's on Fire!

When I was in Bible college I met a missionary named Mark Triplett. I remember him telling a story about a bar that was in his neighborhood in Argentina. He didn't want it there. Neither did his church members. It was bringing chaos and darkness into his city. So he put a demolition plan in place.

He and his church members boarded the church bus and parked it right smack dab in the middle of the bar's parking lot. And they commanded that bar be shut down. They didn't pray sweet little, "Oh God, please remove this bar from our neighborhood kind-of-prayer".  No! They told that bar where to go.

Every night for a week they parked their bus in that parking lot and spoke up. After a week, goodness gracious!! Want to know what happened? The bar caught on fire. Right before their very eyes that sucker burned to the ground. Mission accomplished.

Take Away:

1. You have been given authority to move mountains (mountains are things in your life that shouldn't be there).

2. The mountain may not move overnight or even right away. Keep at it and don't give up.

3. You destroy things first in the spirit realm that will eventually be destroyed in the physical realm. It starts in the spirit. Then manifests in the natural.

Speak Up

Don't be afraid to speak to your mountain. You've got things in your life you can move at your command. The authority has been given to you as a believer in Christ. Use it. Stop praying and start commanding!

Find Out if Selfishness Fuels Your Prayer Life

To see if you’ve got some kind of selfish yuck motivating your prayers here’s a question for you: What fuels your prayer life?

Try This One:
Selfishness. Your prayers are all about you. No? Maybe? Let's look a little closer at what fuels your prayers by discovering the different "levels" of your prayer life.

Level 1 Prayer Life - Is all about you. You pray for your needs. Not so much for others. These are "What's in it for me prayers." The buck stops with you.

Level 2 Prayer Life - You pray for you + those closest to you. You and your inner circle. A little broader than the first, so that's progress.

Level 3 Prayer Life - You are other-focused. You sincerely love others outside your family and the world around you. You feel the pain of national crisis, your heart breaks for injustice, you look out for the needy and it fuels you to pray. And you do this because you know you can make a difference if you pray for more than just yourself.

Level 4 Prayer Life - You are directed by God to pray for the things that are on his heart. Your heart cries, "Break my heart Lord for the things that break your heart. May I be an instrument of change bringing about your will to the world at large."

Is your prayer life on level 1,2,3, or 4?
The answer will tell you what fuels your prayers. If it's level 1 or 2, don't fret, just try to stretch your prayers beyond yourself a little everyday. No beating yourself up. You're a work in progress. Gradually take the plunge and spend some time praying for others. As you do, you will be changing people's lives...and yours!

Ephesians 6:18 NLT
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

To make it easier you can make a list so you can remember people who have needs. I sometimes make 3 to 4 columns in my prayer journal. A column for each prayer level. As I learn about prayers that have been answered for those on my list, I check them off. And that gives me fuel for thankfulness.

So now the question isn't, "What fuels your prayer life?" It's, “What's going to fuel your prayer life?"

The Ultimate Prayer-Play Book to Help You Win In Every Situation

My son's varsity basketball playbook is setting on the couch. So a few minutes ago I moseyed over there to take a look. Flipping though it I discovered a lot of detail. Man! I had no idea the plays he had to memorize!

That playbook's an asset he can refer back to when he needs to know what the coach has called for. In fact, if he and his teammates didn't have that playbook, they wouldn't have made it to regionals. They've become district champs and tonight they play for the title of regional champs. BUT, if those guys don't study that book, learn those plays, and execute them…it's over.

For Every Challenge or Need, God Has Outlined a Play We Can Pray

Ever felt like your prayers were useless? Like even though you prayed, you were beaten? How are you feeling right now? Like you have no chance of victory? Hold up! We too have a playbook. It’s a "Prayer-Play" Book.

With this playbook we have every "prayer-play" for every situation our opponent challenges us with. We just have to know the plays. And knowing the plays is really not as difficult as it seems. You don't even have to memorize EVERY play. You just need to know where to find the plays. Let me show you how easy this is.

1st, Go Grab the Playbook!

Where do you get this playbook? Well, you probably already have one. Yes, I'm talking about the Bible. And if you don't have one, you can get access to it online or even get a Bible app on your Smartphone.

It's never been easier to find specific plays directly from our coach's mouth. God gives us the plays in the Bible. For every problem, every challenge, every type of situation, God has outlined a play we can pray. The Bible is FULL of wisdom and golden nuggets. We just have to play them…or rather pray them!

We are promised success if we execute the plays in God's word.

Josh 1:8 NLT says:

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Where to Find Specific Prayer-Plays for Specific Problems:

Got a concordance? Get it out. Don't have one? No sweat, get to your computer, tablet, or Smartphone and use a search engine. Google, Bing, Yahoo. Whatever your search engine of choice - it will double as your concordance.

1. Simply Search

I say simply because it's not hard. Type in what you need a scripture for. Example: Need a scripture on hope? Type in: "Scriptures on hope". Need help figuring out how to pray for children? Type in: "Scriptures to pray over kids." It's that simple. Need strength? You know what to do. Either search for “strength” online or go to your concordance (usually at the back of your Bible) and look it up.

2. Make a Prayer-Play Book

Once you find the scripture references, look them up and write them down. Then take each scripture and pray them. You can personalize by inserting the name of the person you are praying for.

For example, this morning I needed an extra dose of energy and stamina. So I grabbed a scripture about strength and inserted myself into the scripture and prayed it like this:

I can do all things through Christ because he strengthens me. (From Philippians 4:13)

A couple weeks ago, a member of this blog community was having a hard time knowing what to do about a situation. I found this scripture and prayed it over her by inserting her name into it. I prayed it out loud like this:

I pray that Patricia will trust in the Lord with all her heart; and that she will not depend on her own understanding. I pray Patricia will seek God's will in all she does, and he will show her which path to take. (From Proverbs 3:5)

This is how I prayed for my family this morning:

I have not stopped thanking God for Ted, Tyler, and Tiffany. I'm asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give them spiritual wisdom and insight so that Ted, Tyler, and Tiffany might grow in their knowledge of God. I pray that their hearts will be flooded with light so that they can understand the confident hope he has given to them. I also pray that Ted, Tyler, and Tiffany will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power. (From Ephesians 1 NLT)

As I'm reading my Bible, I just pop the names of my husband and two teenagers into the scriptures and pray it over them. I pray God's play!

Making a "Prayer-Play Book" is as simple as gathering scriptures concerning your opponent (what your dealing with, or the need in your life) and praying the verses. Do that, and you will have a playbook right from God's mouth.

Search for his plays, pray his plays. and you will score.

P.S. Congrats on your win!

Let us know how you have prayed some of God’s plays. If you want, you can even pray a little prayer-play over your fellow blog readers. Put your prayer for them in the comment section for every one to read! Thanks!

When You Don’t Know What to Say When You Pray – Try This!

We've all been there - at a place in our lives not knowing what to say when we pray. Just what do you say to God when your mouth is empty? What do you do when you just can't find the words to discuss your situation with God? Here's a little jump-start. It's a prayer booster. There's four steps. It begins in your imagination, so...

Picture This:

When you are totally ignorant about how to pray - whether it be little things or big things - you don't worry. You can relax knowing that you have the help of the Holy Spirit and he coaches you on what to say. Even though you are limited in your view, he enlarges the picture. Though you may not have all the facts and details to pray effectively, your partner prays through you. You don't have to figure out your prayers on your own. You rest easy knowing you have help when you pray.

Scripture This:

Romans 8:26 NLT:

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

2 Corinthians 6:1 NLT:

As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it.

Pray This:

Father, when I am at a loss for words, I am so grateful that your Holy Spirit fills my mouth! I ask the Holy Spirit to help me continuously as I pray. Partner with me and collaborate with me in prayer. I want to be part of your team so that my prayers get me out of any mess, put me on the right path, and make a difference in other people's lives. Thank you, Holy Spirit for helping me pray prayers that make a difference.

Say This:

God's Spirit is right there helping me along. If I don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does my praying in and for me, making prayer out of my wordless sighs and my aching groans. He keeps me present before God. That's why I am so sure that every detail of my life is working into something good. With the Holy Spirit as my helper, I am getting better and better in prayer every day!

Making Prayer Sandwiches Can Help You Sleep Better & Start the Next Day Right

Ever had something gnawing atcha that kept you awake at night? A problem? A concern? A need? Let me show you how a prayer sandwich can help you sleep better. No joke, make one of these babies each day as you pray and you'll rest easy as soon as your little head hits your pillow. And bonus - you'll start your next day right!

How do you assemble a prayer sandwich?

It's as simple as slapping two pieces of bread together with something in the middle. But in this case, we're using a morning prayer and an evening prayer sandwiched together with some really amazing filler in the middle of your day!

1. Laying down the 1st piece of your prayer sandwich:

Pray in the morning as soon as you wake up - thanking God for as many things as you can think of. Your health, your family, your friends, your car, your job. How about the fact that you had a bed to crawl out of? A coffee maker you are making your way toward that's going to give you a piping hot steamy cup of AHHH! Anything you can think of to thank God for is fair game for the first piece of bread in your prayer sandwich.

2. Laying down the meat of your prayer sandwich:

Pray about the events of your day. Your agenda and tasks. This is the meat of your sandwich because it's dealing with the meat of your day. The concerns and needs you have along with prayers for people you know and love. Don't forget the people you will cross paths with who need the love of Jesus.

3. Laying down the last piece of bread that completes the sandwich:

Before you go to bed, thank God for all he did for you today. Thank him for all that you accomplished. Then, give him all of your unsolved problems. Now this is important, because if you successfully unload all of your cares, big and small, dumping them into his lap, you won't need to wake up in the middle of the night worrying about them. You will sleep better - I promise!

When you sandwich your day with prayer - you will sleep better at night and start the next day right.

How to Pray for Bad Attitude Stinkers

Got a bad attitude and want to shed it?
Let me introduce you to a little gem of a verse that we can pray to get rid of our nasty stinky attitudes for good!

When I was a youth pastor many moons ago, I took our youth group out to an area where homeless people lived so we could give them some food, toiletry items, and share the love of God with them. We made a lot of friends and this one guy in particular had a soft spot in my heart. His name was Shorty.

We picked Shorty up Sunday morning to take him to church and because he hadn't had a shower in a few weeks he smelled horrible. His hair was disgusting and his skin was encrusted with dirt. So I took him to our house to let him shower.

Filth Has to Come Off

Since his clothes smelled like something had died in them I searched for some clothes that fit him. I looked through my husband's closet and found an out fit. I was hoping that after he showered, he'd put it on. But as soon as Shorty got cleaned up he put his old, crusty, smelly clothes back on.

I said, Shorty, it's not going to do you any good to clean your body and put dirty clothes back on. I handed him my husband’s clothes and told him he could take the dirty clothes off and put on the clean clothes.

Have You Taken Off Dirty Attitudes & Put Them Back On?

This is what a lot of Christian believers do. Jesus washed us clean of all our sin and we put on a new robe of righteousness. But many people choose to reach back down and pick up old negative attitudes and stinking thinking the same way they did before they got saved. They are clean on the inside but their attitudes make them smell on the outside.

James 1:21 NLT:

So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

The word "filth" in this verse in the Greek is the word, "raparian". It describes a man whose body and clothes are so dirty that they smell disgusting to everyone near him.

James is describing a believer who is pessimistic, negative, uncooperative, and cynical. They just stink like crap! You've met people like this, I'm sure! Their attitude and disposition is so unpleasant it drives everyone away from them.

But could that also be you? Could it be me? If so, we - you and I, have to make the decision to "get rid of all the filth" - which is not referring to dirty clothes, but the stinking attitudes you and I may have.  We've got to lay down these attitudes and push them so far out of the way that we aren't able to reach down to pick them up again.

Push Away Attitudes Till They're Out of Reach

That's just what I did with Shorty's clothes. I didn't wash them. I tossed them out! I didn't want Shorty to have any chance of picking those filthy, crusty clothes up and putting them back on. And that's what we must do with our filthy attitudes. Let's pray that we push them so far out of the way we will be unable to pick them back up.

You can pray like this:

"God, thank you for washing me with the your Word, and what Jesus did for me on the cross. It makes me brand new. Forgive me for clinging to my old ways of thinking because they stink! Today, help me to drop those old bad attitudes and never pick them back up again. Right now, I let go of old stinking attitudes and ways of thinking. I ask you to help me think and behave in a way that is consistent with being a new creature in Christ. Because that's who I am!"

How Do You Know if YOU Have Bad Attitudes?

  1. Do people gravitate toward you or are they repulsed by your smell? (Hint, hint!)
  2. Do you talk more about negative things or positive things?
  3. Got any attitudes that smell to you? (Get rid of them before others detect the smell!)

See If You Pray Prayers You Don’t Need To Pray

Are your prayers fat? You know…stuffed with words you don't need? Let's see if you've ever prayed something that you didn't need to pray.

Here's a couple examples of "Fat Prayers" that contain words that are utterly useless:

  • Have you ever asked God to heal you when he says that by his stripes you were healed?
  • Have you ever asked God to give you joy, peace, and love when the Word says you already have the fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, and peace?

If God has already promised something to you in his word, then you don't have to ask for it.

Then how do you pray?

Glad you asked!

Let's strip away the fat in your prayers:

1. If the Bible says it's yours, stop asking.

If I gave you a cup of coffee you'd be pretty silly to ask, "Can I please drink my coffee?" You don't have to ask for something that you've already been given. If God's Word says you can have it, there's no need to ask.

2. Thank God for what he said you have.

When you thank God for what he's already provided through Christ's death on the cross, you are activating your faith. You can't thank God for something unless you believe you really have it, right? So just take God's word for it. Thank him that it's on the way to you, and your faith will grow for what you are believing for.

3. Say What the Bible says you have.

Got a specific need? Ok, grab your Bible concordance or use Google and search for scriptures that address your specific need. For example, if your finances have taken a plunge, look up finances or other words related to it and find scriptures that tell you what you are entitled to as a believer in Christ.

James says, "Above all else, I wish that you prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers."

God inspired this scripture - he had James write it on his behalf, so it's safe to say, that's what God wants for you.

Now, say what God has given you. Talk about what the Bible says is yours. This will set it in motion because your faith-filled words have power. You could simply say, "I will prosper and be in good health, even as my soul prospers." There ya go! You are setting yourself up to receive that promise.

To Strip Away the Fat in Your Prayers That Make Them Useless:

1. Stop asking for what you've already been given.

2. Thank God for what he has given you.

3. Speak about what he has given you.
